Square Enix Shows Off Its Next Generation Engine With Two Videos

You may recall Agni's Philosophy: Final Fantasy Realtime Tech Demo from E3. It was a somewhat mysterious video that showcased Square Enix's next generation engine with what could be a new Final Fantasy game, or maybe just a cool short film.

Yesterday, Square Enix released a pair of videos showcasing a few more details about the engine, codenamed Luminous Studio. The video shows off (presumably) real time editing of two of the characters featured in the short.

  • Next gen is going to be a blast. Horray for beards!
  • We could have this now on PC if consoles would just die off
  • That is AMAZING graphics!!!!
  • That looks great and all and I'm really looking forward to it but....whens Versus XIII gonna come out?
  • This is impressive.  Can't wait for the next gen

  • Wow. Just wow.

  • That looks pretty incredible. :O

  • Still looking sweet.

  • How does it look during gameplay?
  • Im concerned that this is mostly going to affect cut scenes. I don't know about you but at this point i dont really care if my cut scenes are super pretty. I need to see the new system's gameplay before i get excited. Sweat on my characters face is fine, but remember, most of the time you'll either be in first person or staring at the back of the characters head...
  • Incredible!

  • I wonder if they'd use such tech for any remakes of games from their back catalogue? An FF8 remake like that....
  • These graphics are indeed amazing. I will take good gameplay over graphics any day though so i hope that studios dont sacrifice mechanics for these better graphics.
  • Beautiful. Detailed. Powerful. Amazing. Now this is like having a tool box full of top of the line tools but no building anything with them. Tools aren't meant to be admired, their meant to be used. Use your tools Square.
  • You could see that priest in one of the Versus trailers, I wonder if Square Enix is going to use the new engine to build Verus.
  • Looking forward to next-gen
  • It's a good thing that they're showing this off now, as it usually takes them 5 years to make anything. They seriously have one of the most inefficient development cycles of any of the publishers, and this generation has been far from kind to them. Hopefully they can turn it around because I would hate to see them go under and drag Eidos right along with them.
  • wow! next gen is coming near!

  • Next gen consoles will get a watered down version of this. It's running on a high end PC.
  • Wow. It's hard to believe this is coming soon. The dawn of a new era approaches.
