ArenaNet Deals Massive Blow To Guild Wars 2 Bots

In a new blog, Guild Wars 2 security coordinator Mike Lewis announced the company booted more than 34,000 bots from the game in November alone.

“We've gathered massive amounts of information about the habits of both normal players and automated bot players," writes Lewis. "We contracted a team of data specialists to help us build comprehensive tools that comb through this data and find effective ways to single out and terminate bot accounts. Automating this process has been a major focus of the ArenaNet security team, and we're now seeing the considerable fruits of this labor.”

Thanks to the bot-slaying tools, Lewis says the number of bots being reported worldwide has dropped from 2,000 per hour in October to just 20. The post also outlines other steps the Guild Wars 2 team is taking.

"Another way we identify and combat bots is through manual observation," said Lewis. "Our GM staff is equipped to monitor the game around the clock and detect bots from within the game itself. We have a considerable task force assigned to patrolling the world and eliminating bots, as well as helping us continue to improve and refine our automatic detection tools."

  • It's a shame the lengths people go to, to advance in an MMO nowadays.
Btw...How does someone even go about using a bot? Do they program them or something? I have no clue about these things. Still an MMO noob in training. XD
  • that is about how many i reported.

  • Looks like the bots have been...terminated
  • I wonder when they'll work on making the game fun past the initial experience.
  • Yeah, stick it to those botters!
I kind of wish I was playing Guild Wars 2, actually, but my patience for the MMO model in general has significantly declined over the years. I dunno if I'd stick around.

Still, it's great to see the staff successfully combating this stuff!
  • TAKE THAT EVIL BOTS!

  • Hahah nice. What. A. Blow.

  • Level 42
Didn't play for a month go to play
    banned.
    It was stupid.
Never playing a game from them again.
  • 2000 bot reports per hour! Holy crap. And they cut out 2 zeroes! Good work ANet! Proud to be a Guild Wars 2 player!
  • I don't play the game but it's always good to see devs cracking down on people that try to cheat or exploit in a game.
  • Love Arenanet they do good job keeping gw2 running I have run into a mob of bots and they all kinda disappeared I guess they got terminated or something.

  • :)

  • I honestly don't understand the appeal of bots.... progressing your character is part of the fun of playing MMOs....
  • I like how they take action against bots. Unlike some companies....

  • Good to see they are cracking down on bots. On a related note to the game does anyone know if Areanet sells physical key generators to protect your account?

  • Well good for them.

  • More MMO companies should be this tough on bots. They destroy the balance of the economy.

  • Honestly, gw2 was alright.  Some cool mechanics but all around the same game as any other MMO out there.  It gets repetitive quickly, and the end game content is almost non-existent and ultra repetitive.  Has no replay value for me.  Sold  my account for $140 after I got 100% map completion.  I may go back and play gw1 though.  Now THAT, was an MMO.

  • Good for ANet. On a related note, I find it funny that Blizzard has come to embrace the real-world currency/in-game currency relationship with their Diablo III auction house. Diablo bots don't even have to deal shadily - there's a mechanic set up so they can sell openly! I wonder what the rational was for implementing such a system. I wonder if it will make it into other Blizzard MMOs.
  • 2000 per hour. cool. wahaha.
