Distribution Mistake Means Free Halo 4 Crimson Map Pack DLC

The offers available to the pre-purchasers of Halo 4's map pack DLCs were a little complicated, but the confusion has lead to a free map pack, as long as you grab it quickly enough.

Shortly before the release of Halo 4, Microsoft and 343 Industries announced a promotion that if you played the game within the first two weeks of release, you would receive a code that would give you early access to certain multiplayer specializations. Users who received that code discovered that if they redeemed it, they could download Halo 4's first map pack, the Crimson map pack, for free. This was not something that was supposed to happen, but Microsoft has embraced the mistake and is now encouraging gamers who participated in the, "14 Day, Buy and Play," promotion to grab the maps before Tuesday December 18. Here's the official words from Microsoft:

As an additional reward to those customers that participated in our "14 Day, Buy and Play" program (which ran from Nov. 6 – Nov. 20), we are providing complimentary access to the Crimson Map Pack for a limited time, through Tuesday, December 18 at 9am UTC/GMT.

There were some initial complications with the distribution of the "14 day, Buy and Play" reward tokens, and so we decided to provide the additional reward of complimentary access to the Crimson Map Pack, for a limited time, as a "thank you" to our customers that contributed to the success of the "Halo 4" launch.

  • Should be free anyway.

  • YAY I was wondering how i got it :D thanks for the mistake 343!

  • So what about the ones who paid for it... Do we get our damn money back?

  • So who's buying the Halo 5 LE? AH HA!!!! Thought not....

  • It's not free. 800 points.

  • How did I not know this I was planning on buying this on Friday instead I'm downloading it for free right now free stuff is awesome.

  • doesn't seem fair considering I payed for it......

  • Im ready for Halo 4 cant wait to play it

  • Good thing they are free.....after playing them for 2 days I can say they suck....WAYYYY to big and the achievements are lame also.  Man they literally just need to remake 3 maps and add 1 new map and I think we would all be happy.

  • Looks like the season pass isn't saving anyone any money provided they bought Halo 4 within the first two weeks and played it. Maybe they'll throw in a fourth map pack or something. I don't understand all the anger from those feeling like they were ripped off. It wasn't intentional and they aren't trying to alienate anyone. It happened. Accept it and move on.

  • This isn't a good thing. I spent 25 bucks on a map pack, and they are giving NO compensation whatsoever for this.

  • Downloaded it free. I bought the hal4 xbox to go with my other halo reach and halo 2/halo 3 xboxes and did not get this pack or anything else with it anyway.

the armor and special lightrfile at the start of multiplayer is my new friend in that game though still have never used the halo 4 xbox it has been turned on once to see if it worked .
  • You snooze, you lose.

  • Oh and there is a special way you have to buy it to make the Bug in the game code kick in it is still registers by the game as 0 points and will not charge.
  • Bank error in your favor: collect $15
  • Accepting their mistakes and giving it away anyway. I like it.

  • Well I'm glad they embraced their mistake and are leaving it free for some time. A great way to handle this situation. Great job 343.

  • Hahaha nice.

  • Everytime I hear about this stuff, I regret selling my 360...I sold it right before Gears 3 was announced, then Halo gets another title.

  • I bought my LE and I feel a little ripped off. First, they give normal users a code for the other Specializations, THEN they give them all the LE armor and emblems, and NOW they get the first map pack for free. They are essentially saying "Yeah, we are going to reward the people who were smart and didn't spend an extra $40, and make the five whole Limited Edition customers feel bad."
