Distribution Mistake Means Free Halo 4 Crimson Map Pack DLC

The offers available to the pre-purchasers of Halo 4's map pack DLCs were a little complicated, but the confusion has lead to a free map pack, as long as you grab it quickly enough.

Shortly before the release of Halo 4, Microsoft and 343 Industries announced a promotion that if you played the game within the first two weeks of release, you would receive a code that would give you early access to certain multiplayer specializations. Users who received that code discovered that if they redeemed it, they could download Halo 4's first map pack, the Crimson map pack, for free. This was not something that was supposed to happen, but Microsoft has embraced the mistake and is now encouraging gamers who participated in the, "14 Day, Buy and Play," promotion to grab the maps before Tuesday December 18. Here's the official words from Microsoft:

As an additional reward to those customers that participated in our "14 Day, Buy and Play" program (which ran from Nov. 6 – Nov. 20), we are providing complimentary access to the Crimson Map Pack for a limited time, through Tuesday, December 18 at 9am UTC/GMT.

There were some initial complications with the distribution of the "14 day, Buy and Play" reward tokens, and so we decided to provide the additional reward of complimentary access to the Crimson Map Pack, for a limited time, as a "thank you" to our customers that contributed to the success of the "Halo 4" launch.

  • Just a little hiccup I suppose, at least they take care of the community which is the source of success for online shooters. Great Game.
  • the fact that they embraced their mistake and are allowing the gaming community to profit off of it by allowing them time to take advantage of it is an awesome step. ya lublu 343...
  • Wow. Stuff like this sure doesn't happen often. Thanks 343.
  • I've played the game since launch, and they didn't send me a code.
  • The one day I happen to break my controller.   Wow...

  • Cool I get the map pack anyway because I got the Limited Edition. Anyway that is a good move on Microsoft's part to "embrace" the mistake.
  • Pretty cool, but how were you supposed to get the code? I've been playing since day one. Was I supposed to sign up for it?
  • that kind of sucks for people who payed for the wargames pass.
  • LOL i was wondering why it let me download it for free the other day!

  • So i guess i get a free map pack. Cool, since i wasnt planning on actually buying this.

  • Thanks 343, you've made me regret getting the LE.
  • I'm having the same problem as a few people here too. Not being able to get it for free... When I've played since the day it came out. I'm willing to pay 10 dollars for it. But not when it is for free!
  • Is there a trick to downloading these maps? I entered the code but it still says that I need to pay 800 points.
  • Hmm, just checked and it still wants me to pay 800 MSP, and I don't see anything on 343's website about it... anyone else having similar problems?
  • I bought the game on launch at midnight and played it every day of those 2 weeks and never got a code. How?
  • Cool. For those wondering, it looks like you just need to access the Marketplace option on the game's main menu. Manually going through Xbox.com or the dashboard charges, but going through the game seemingly doesn't.
  • Sweet.

  • sweetness. one tip gi did not point out. if you have code enter it then start the game and download through the games store. not your dashboard. if you try through your dashboard it will charge you. but the game its free :D
  • This whole Kotaku article is a big lie by all three involved. Simple rundown of what happened and why you probably can't download the maps if you have not already...

    1. Crimson Maps came out, glitched to high hell where no one could download them.

    2. MS fixed them then glitched them so everyone who got the specialization codes could download.

    3. MS states on Twitter "its on us, have at it"

    twitter.com/.../278254316253507584

    4. MS realizes their mistake, and makes up some huge excuse while 343i is more quiet then at anytime they were actually making Halo 4.

So why can't you download the maps anymore? MS fixed it, this was all a lie on their part and if the trial thing is true then its a slap to the face to everyone since NO ONE was told about this beforehand anywhere on the internet or H4 until the glitch peaked. Run that story GI.
