Perfect Destinations For Open World Games

With tomorrow's release of Far Cry 3, the lush South Pacific comes to life on our game consoles. This got us thinking about what other destinations would make for a great open world experience. The viable locales for a game seem endless. So far we've been to the snowy mountains of Skyrim, the crime-filled streets of Hong Kong in Sleeping Dogs, and experienced the American Old West in Red Dead Redemption, just to name a few.

But what are some destinations ripe for an open world game that have yet to be explored? Do you prefer when these worlds are entirely fictitious like Empire City in Infamous or based on real world destinations, such as Assassin's Creed, which transported us to Jerusalem, Italy, and colonial America? Most importantly, what makes these worlds come alive for you?

Personally, I want some more futuristic worlds, which is why I'm looking forward to CD Projekt RED's Cyberpunk. As well, I've always thought Australia's outback would make for a good romp. The outback is beautiful, and the opportunity to be transported there instantly with realistic graphics is an opportunity I wouldn't pass up.

  • Next Assassins Creed location: Carribean and Florida. Connor becomes an assassin pirate. Expanded naval combat is a must and the boarding of enemy ships should happen during gameplay, not as a short cutscene.
  • I never thought I'd enjoy a game set in the past but Assassin's creed proved differently before that I wanted eitherr fantasy or modern day, futuristic settings seem cool if done right
  • I've always been fascinated with Nevada, and Las Vegas. So a open world Mob story with real casinos and a huge desert would sound pretty damn cool to me.
  • I'd like an open world game that takes place on an Ice planet!
  • Mainland China. Bamboo forests, mountains, temples, jungles. A lot of good material there.

  • I would like to see an open world of some Mass Effect locations, like Rannoch or Tuchanka. That last one can be like Fallout 3 with Krogans. Or include a game with more than one of these planets, all open world.
  • I'd like some more sci-fi open worlds.
  • I really like the setting from the first Assassin's Creed. There is just so much potential in that setting. But for new settings.... I think feudal Japan would be perfect. Or even China.
  • New World pre-European colonization. Game set in the Mayan or Incan Empires. Preferably Incan since i'm Peruvian. :)
  • An open world where you play as Batman in Gotham City.
  • I think Australia would be fascinating. Huge sprawling cities, the Great Barrier Reef, the outback. Far cry 4 can take a lot from this. Great white sharks, box jelly fish, anacondas, kangaroos.
  • Disney World. As long as you have a rocket launcher.
Washington, D.C. See above. (Fallout doesn't count. Too pre-destroyed.)
Hyrule. That hasn't been done yet, right?
    My cousin's house.
    The Hayden Planetarium.
  • Chicago. FO4 needs to be in Chicago.
  • An open world set in the Mughal era of India would certainly be interesting.

  • Well all know Los Angeles has been done during the 40's. (L.A. Noire) Chicago in modern times is in the works (Watch Dogs) New York has been the them for couple open world games. (Assassin's Creed III, True Crime: New York City, GTA IV, Godfather). London has been done in Getaway: Black Monday. This is tough. Maybe Modern day Berlin or Rome?
  • Or it will come to life on our gaming PCs... The destination doesn't really matter to me, just that it's more immersive and more interactive. I want the open world experience to be so believable and organic that I can never get enough of it.

  • futuristic worlds would be nice. (hope some devs can make it "Really awesome")

  • I just like going to a new setting in a game, it doesn't really matter too much what the setting is, as long as it is a place I haven't seen before.

  • I'd like to see an Assassin's Creed game take place in France during the Revolution, or maybe England during the Hundred Years' War or War of the Roses, and a half-sequel could lead into Shakespearean England.

When it comes to fantasy worlds, I'd love a Kingkiller Chronicle game, or a game based on Mistborn (which is coming out, so yay!). I'd also like an open world Middle-Earth game that's not an MMO or in Lego form. I know they're making a Middle-Earth Skyrim mod, but last I heard it was having legal trouble.
