Microsoft Sees Big Black Friday Sales

Microsoft released some sales data from Black Friday last week. In the U.S. alone, the company sold 750,000 Xbox 360 consoles. That number is down from last year, however. In 2011, Microsoft sold 960,000 consoles in the U.S. during Black Friday.

Additionally, Xbox Live Gold Subscription card sales increased more than 50 percent compared to last year’s Black Friday week.

  • Nice to see Microsoft is finally making money :p
  • Great for Microsoft. Unfortunately I did not make any purchases this black friday.
  • Yeah! PS3 sucks! I'll keep buying XBOXs no matter how many times they break down. Live is better on Xbox than PS3. RAwrrrrrrr!
  • Dude. Serious $$$!

  • Even though that's less then last year, that's still a lot.
  • Wow.. over 1.7 million units in two years on those two days alone? America is nuts..
  • I almost got one but I sold my fat 80gb ps3 and got the super slim ps3 250gb bundle from Walmart, ended up getting 5 free games with it and a headset + charging dock for a total of $230.00.
  • G.I is xbox fanboy lol funk xbox funk sony funk nintendo just go with whats good.
  • Wow. I almost don't believe my eyes. After 5+ years, you'd think most people who wanted a 360 already had one. Uh, kudos to Microsoft, I guess.
  • ooh.

  • Whether it is the Wii, PS3, or Xbox 360 I'm still surprised to see sales numbers so high, given the length of this console generations lifespan.
  • See, this to me is more proof that we are not ready for new consoles yet, 750,000 is a pretty impressive # for a decade old system
  • I wonder how many of those were repeat buyers upgrading their Xbox's. Again.

I think this generation has seen more "I'm buying the same console more than once" than any other generation--ever. It's sad when we're familiar with seeing people who bought 3 Xbox 360's over the generation, or 2 PS3's.

It's no wonder actual game sales seem low, if hardware numbers are skewed in such a way. I'm really curious as to how many Xbox 360's and PS3's have been sold this generation to repeat buyers.

I wouldn't be surprised if the number of repeat-buyer X360 sales were as high as 5-10 million.

Here's a poll I set up to get some insight into this very phenomenon: http://www.gameinformer.com/forums/general_gaming/f/12/t/327008.aspx

Right on over in the General Gaming forum. Let's see how the 7th generation was really broken down!
  • We had alot of people upgrading their PS3 and 360's at the GS I work at so that's gonna be alot more used sales in the future but at this point I don't think it's hurting Sony/Micro. When you can trade in a system and get the newest one for $10-20 why not?
  • Good job. I still hate the 360. Maybe I'll get the 720 when it comes out. Most definitely getting the ps4
  • Lol gotta love Black Friday, sure does wonders for sells.

  • So a seven-year-old console nearly doubled the sales of a brand-new console. That can't just be dismissed since the Wii U is selling itself as a competitor to the Xbox and PS3. Might not mean much, but it does seem like an early indication of a major problem people foresee with the Wii U: if it can't compete with 360/PS3 sales, it's in serious trouble. Also, Nintendo's saying the Wii U is sold out but it's available at just about every local retail outlet around me. But let's also not pretend that Nintendo isn't severely allocating available units.
  • Surprised that there's still that many people still looking to buy a 360 (because their market penetration is already very good).

  • A good portion of that was due to the recent release of Halo 4.
  • Well yeah.  They see huge sales every year.  but didn't expect to see that many consoles were bought.  Wow.
