Wii U Sales Hit 400,000 In The U.S.

Nintendo said today it has sold 400,000 units of the Wii U last week during the console's launch in the United States, according to the company's internal sales estimates. In 2006, Nintendo said it sold 600,000 units of the original Wii console through the first eight days of launch in North America.

"Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenish stock," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said in an interview with CNET. "Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they're selling out immediately."

Additionally, Nintendo said it sold 300,000 Wiis, 250,000 3DS units and 275,000 DS units during last week.

[Correction: Nintendo sold 600,000 units of the original Wii in North America in 2006 through the first eight days. Not just the U.S. Nintendo sold 475,000 Wii systems in the U.S. in the first 8 days. The story has been corrected above.]

  • I'm not regretting my purchase at all. I can't wait for the online community to get even bigger. So far, it's a very active and enthusiastic online community. The console itself is perfect. Just last night I was watching Walking Dead and playing Mario at the exact same time. It was a dream come true.
  • I wish I was one of the 400,000.
  • Honestly, I haven't liked a home console this much probably since the N64. The Wii U is a lot of fun, it sucks to see people hating on it for no reason.
  • I don't care about motion controls or a touchscreen an a home console. Also, putting your name Wii or U in the titles? It makes me want to throw up. I had every Nintendo console until they started with this child's play thing posing as a console. Call me after you start making big boy consoles again then we can talk Nintendo.
  • Not bad. Seems like the skeptics who predicted massive launch failure for the Wii U have been put to shame.
  • I forgot to say that these numbers are great considering these are just US numbers. Imagine when this releases in other parts of the world....The Japanese go crazy over Nintendo stuff. Especially a NEW Nintendo Console that will have a Monster Hunter game coming to it, they will sell millions and millions with Monster Hunter.

  • People are still going to say this will be dwarfed when the next Sony/Micro release their next systems but I don't see that happening. With the games looking great like they do on WiiU and the price of the competitions consoles people will be more likely to get a WiiU than another $500+ console. Heck, the games are more than likely going to be at least $70.
  • I have a 3DS and a DS. I haven't paid off my Wii U just yet.

  • Indeed! I hope that the sales for nintendo keep up!

  • That's really impressive !

Can't wait to see how it will perform in December :)

  • I'm not surprised.

  • And the Wii U sold 0 in Canada??? Lol.

  • That's pretty amazing. Especially the bit about the Wii and DS still selling thousands.

  • Played Nintendo Land with a bunch of friends Saturday night. It was a big hit! Playing 5 player games and using the tablet controller made for an interesting game dynamic. I'm not regretting my purchase.

  • I can't believe the original DS line is still selling so strongly.  It really is the PS2 of this generation.

  • Yay!

good for Nintendo, and they had better be doing their best to meet demand because i still haven't gotten mine

  • Of the 400000 sold, 200000 are on ebay, craigslist, etc.
  • There NOT doing there best to replenish anything, this has always been a part of Nintendo's repetative shrewd strategy, to create demand through limited production. They didnt even start full scale production until about 2 months ago and divided thier resources between the WiiU and the Wii mini, to thwart holiday sales of thier competition. I respect the cunning, but Let's not go and pretend this is some victory based on the quality of the product. That said it's got some nice hardware, but as per usual, asside from the 1 or 2 Nintendo core titles the system has no software to offer, and dont mention COD cause the online is a joke.
