Let's Talk About Sonic The Hedgehog

If Wikipedia is to be believed, yesterday was the 20th anniversary of Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Let's talk about the discolored hedgehog. Real hedgehogs are brown after all.

Are you still a fan of the red-shoed erinaceidae? I grew up in a Nintendo household myself, so I spent my elementary school days arguing in favor of a plumber who didn't spend much time plumbing. When I did get my hands on Sonic at a friends house, however, I always had a good time.

How do you feel about Sonic? Is he past his prime? Is he still a force to be reckoned with? Do you still get excited for each new release? Or do you let them pass you by like a high-speed blue blur?

Also, did you know that in New Zealand and the islands of Scotland, the hedgehog is considered a pest?

  • If Sega just stopped trying so hard and made a regular old 2D sidescrolling Sonic game, I think they wouldn't have so much trouble. That's where Sonic shines! As is, with all the dumb spinoffs and such, I don't see him thriving. He certainly hasn't so far.
  • Meh.

That's how I feel about him.

  • I suppose that I'm still a fan of Sonic, ablbeit the Sonic of the past generations. I thought that Sonic Generations was ok, but I miss the old side-scrollers that worked the best. I don't really know if Sonic'll make it to his 30th anniversary, but he's timeless in my book. Nice vocabulary Mr. Hilliard.
  • Old Sonic games had great music, graphics, sound effects, etc. I never really got into em though because the controls were a little sluggish

  • I personally DESPISE Sonic and all of his games.
  • A sentient hedgehog that's able to run at the speed of sound is preposterous, that's what I think. Get your head out of the clouds and back to reality. Explosive lemons; that's where "it's" at.
  • i personally love sonic

  • I think it would be a sound decision to maybe employ a good team for 3D platformers if they intend to keep him in the game. Otherwise, I can't see him going anywhere but hitting, kicking or throwing more balls. Maybe they will actually listen to the fans soon.
  • Never was a fan. To fast paced to enjoy what I was doing.

  • He's past his prime. He may have a decent game once in a while, but it's been a long time since I've seen a good sonic game.

  • Rollin' around at the speed of sound...
  • I kind of honestly dont know how Sonic has made it this far into this generation. As much as I loved the first 4 games and Sonic Adventure 2, the rest of the games have been total disappointments. The main problem is actually the inherent character. Speed and effecient platforming just dont go together. I had alot of fun with the first 4 games, but the concept never really evolved that well. Sonic Adventure 2 was a great exception to what was done well, but everything else afterward seemed like a mimic of that game, while adding other things that were doomed to fail. Sonic riders? Really?! The snowboarding was fun in that one level, but I would never want to play that for a whole game. And everything is waaay too happy in the dire situations that they found themselves in. I think for the next game, they take his character and story in a darker direction, lose the beach boy dialect, and actually put forth effort into a story that calls the antagonist something more respectable than the laughable "Eggman"
  • Yeah I'm a fan of Sonic. His older games were a blast and while Sonic Generations was playable, his newer games aren't so good. He seems to be past his prime.
  • I love Sonic. I used to enjoy the early 3D games, but didn't put any faith in the new ones (or even really play them). Going back to the first few 3D games, I realize they aren't great. Still love the originals, however, and am ecstatic that the new ones are pulling the series out of its slump.

Right now my love of the series is channeled into the Archie comics, which are great (and also introduced me to Mega Man).

  • I love SONIC!!!! Sonic Generations was the comeback he needed!!! For 2D and 3D fans.
  • Ahh man, that hedgehog was the first thing I remember loving besides my parents.
I honestly can't stand him anymore, the character has been ruined for me.

You know how hard you have to tank something to completely negate years and years of fond childhood memories? Sega does.
  • I grew up with Sonic, and followed the games for many years, but looking at him now, I see nothing but a relic.

Honestly, Sonic games now are never any better then "OK", and im convinced thats never going to change.

  • The Genesis games are still some of the best platformers around, but I also enjoyed Colors and Generations quite a bit. I'd really like to see a traditional 16-bit Sonic game similar to what Capcom did with Mega Man 9 sometime in the future.
  • I think SEGA needs to take a whole new approach to Sonic. Instead of putting him into these roller-coaster tracks they call stages, what about drawing some inspiration from Mario and Banjo-Kazooie? Thing is, even though Sonic is known for being fast, I think a lot of people still like him as a character (that is, when his voice and animations are done right. Generations presented us with the most charming version of (modern) Sonic yet, so just take that character, and put him into a Mario game! Of course, that doesn't mean you need to abandon speed, either. Rather, I would simply build the worlds (not start-to-finish stages) to be more Platformer-centric, and maybe holding the Left Trigger would activate "Boost Mode", which lets you temporarily access his trademark speed, without necessarily bogging the entire game down with it. Finally, I would stop trying to make Sonic into some big, epic, world-saving character. Just embrace him for what he is, and instead of taking itself too seriously, focus on just having funny characters that are fun to watch interacting with one another. Maybe instead of saving the world, you're just saving a city? Also, I know this is nitpicking, but... QUIT MAKING SONIC AND FRIENDS SO "SHINY"!!! Seriously, it just looks stupid to see light bouncing off of them like thay're made of plastic. This goes doubly true for Super Sonic and the other Super characters, because the metallic look just isn't nearly as cool.
  • I think he deserves a long break
