Delayed Games Of 2012

Think the back half of 2012 was stacked with video game releases? It could have been even more crowded. Game delays are common in the industry; publishers try to find the best time to release their big titles to maximize sales. But now it seems no month is safe.

Below are a list of some of the big titles that were scheduled for release this year but were pushed to 2013.

Aliens: Colonial Marines

Then: The long-awaited Aliens game from Gearbox software was originally scheduled to launch this fall alongside the laundry list of other shooters.

Now: Sega delayed the game to February 12, 2013. This was the first time the publisher gave Aliens: Colonial Marines a release date since it was revealed on Game Informer's March 2008 cover.

South Park: The Stick of Truth

Then: When South Park graced our January cover, THQ originally scheduled the game for release sometime in 2012. In May, the publisher delayed it until Q1 2013 and later announced a release date of March 5, 2013 at E3.

Now: Last month, THQ announced it was delaying the release of South Park an additional two months to allow for more development time. It's currently scheduled for release this May.

BioShock Infinite

Then: Perhaps the most famous delayed game of the year. BioShock Infinite won numerous E3 2011 awards and was even given an October 16, 2012 release date. Things were looking good. Nearly a year later, however, 2K pushed the game to 2013 and would not show it at press events until it was ready.

Now: BioShock Infinite is still scheduled for release on February 26, 2013. The publisher confirmed as much last month when it unveiled the collector's edition for the game.

Tomb Raider

Then: Yes, you could have been playing Tomb Raider right now had Square Enix not delayed the game. It was originally scheduled for release this fall. It was later pushed to early next year.

Now: Square Enix announced it was releasing Tomb Raider on March 5, 2013. As of this month, that release date is still accurate.

Devil May Cry

Then: The Devil May Cry reboot from developer Ninja Theory that debuted at TGS in 2010 was due out this year. Capcom pushed the title back until 2013 but the wait wasn't too long.

Now: Capcom announced plans to release the game January 5, 2013 in North America and Europe. A playable demo for the game was made available this week.

Comments
  • All I want from these, is Bioshock.
  • Just makes my decision of what game to buy that much harder. BioShock Infinite would have won my money though.

  • You forgot Prey 2! That was one of my most anticipated games after the awesome E3 2011 gameplay video.
  • BioShock and Tomb Raider. I about cried when they were both delayed, now they come out a week apart from each other so I'll have my hands full.

  • These are the games that will make 2013 great.
  • Can't wait for Aliens and BI.

  • Would have gone for BioShock Infinite instead of Dishonored if it kept it's original October release date. But if they need more time to polish it up, then by all means they should take whatever time they need.
  • I'd rather have these games be delayed than getting a beta release with a day 1 patch and many issues that will never be fixed
  • I can't wait for Bioshock and Aliens. I hope the Wii U version of Aliens has the radar with the sound effect from the movie. I would cry.

  • The more so common theme here is that when GameInformer features a cover to a game that is not due out for a while. That game tends to get delayed. Nice work GameInformer.
  • March can't get here fast enough.

Actually, it can, because I have things to do and love winter, but you get the intent.

  • yeap... all true

  • This holiday season turned out to be a lot less interesting than I had planned. Most of the games I planned on getting slipped out and I'm mostly playing catch-up.
  • I am really looking forward to Tomb Raider in 2013. In the meantime though, I'll have AC III to keep me busy.

  • Final Fantasy 13 versus....
  • I am saddened.

  • I think you forgot that they postponed the first person shooter inspired by X-com.
  • You forgot about Sly 4 as well.

  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon was delayed too.
  • Rather them be delayed to be made great

    Not sloppy or outright cancelled
