What Sells This Black Friday

This year's Black Friday should be as intense as ever as shoppers take advantage of money-saving deals. With Nintendo's Wii U system, console/software bundles of every flavor, and major titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops II out, Colin Sebastian, senior research analyst for Baird Research, takes a look at what the industry can expect from this Black Friday.

The most interesting thing to watch on today will be how the Wii U does. Of course, like other Nintendo home consoles, the system is not expected to have a lot of units on shelves because of initial production constraints. Before Black Friday, Sebastian said that the launch went as expected, with stores either sold out of the Wii U or at low inventory levels. However, he notes that so far there isn't the "buying frenzy" that we saw with the original Wii. Perhaps the Wii U's higher price point and less casual focus could be the reason for this.

"It's going to be hard to gauge at this point what consumer adoption is going to be," he tells us regarding the Wii U. Still, he said that smart retailers will have demo units out to let people try the system and perhaps arrange for a rain check if there aren't units on hand. Having a demo unit will also get people in the door and perhaps lead them to buying something else entirely.

Speaking of which, even if you don't pick up a Wii U today, all the console manufacturers have a variety of console/hardware bundles available to get you to buy their systems at a relatively attractive price. While Sebastian says the bundles are necessary to sell the consoles this late in their life cycle, "to really energize the console market, you need to see real price cuts – and that's likely to happen now before this holiday," he says. Of course, the fact that the original Wii is selling for $129 in a bundle definitely helps Nintendo, and Sebastian says Microsoft and Sony should hit this kind of "deep value" price point to accordingly reap the benefits.

As for software, Sebastian says there are absolutely no surprises here – Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Halo 4 (above), and Assassin's Creed III are expected to do big numbers and create "not a great holiday, but a decent holiday" for the industry. All in all, this mirrors what Sebastian expects on the whole. "I don't think you're going to see any big surprises on this Black Friday."

  • I'd like to thank Gameinformer for the tip about the $199 Ps3 bundle. I lucked out and got one during black friday after hearing about it. Much appreciated, guys.
  • I was able to pick up a lot of good stuff today. Probably my favorite deal was the half off Skullcandy Gaming Headset.

  • I got an Xbox 360 250GB Slim Holiday Bundle for $199.99. I'm quite thrilled!
  • I'm pretty sure part of the reason the Wii U isn't selling is because of the extreme lack of advertising. I've seen, literally, one ad for it.. and that was for a game, not even the system itself.
  • hope getting good deals next black friday
  • I got Dishonored for 25 bucks.
  • I only clicked this article because they used a Halo 4 picture. :)
  • Nintendo needs to rethink their marketing strategies. Instead of all these stupid 3DS commercials that say, "My name is _____, and I'm not a gamer." Right there, gamers stop listening, and they don't buy the device. They should instead show off BlOps2, AC3, whatever the Mario game is, and Arkham City on the WiiU. Microsoft and Sony are ahead of Nintendo because they actually cater to gamers.
  • Thank Gaben for the Steam Autumn Sale.
  • Not really that surprising...

  • Cave Johnson here. I hate advertisers and I ain't no car salesman, but look, I need money, and you need stuff. So listen up: Aperture Science has its own hot commodities for you troglodytes this Black Friday, and each will make sure you've got the upper hand when you go shopping.

The Shopper Shover: You've got your Halo 4 and your Wii Whatever, but tons of people are ahead of you in the checkout line. Attach this bad boy to your cart and watch as it does the dirty work for you. It's basically a big weed-whacker, but with hilarious results. Have you ever seen a bunch of people get flung into the candy isle? Ha! It's hilarious!

Self-Regulated Swindler: He's basically your personal shopper. Take him out, rev him up, and he'll go around and take items from your list out of other people's shopping carts. Not only will you get your shopping done, but people will have to backtrack to a different isle to get what they lost, which keeps them shopping longer. Besides, it's funny to see people's faces when the Barbie Doll they just got ends up missing. It's as easy as taking candy from...heh, pretty much everybody!

And we've got the trademark Handheld Portal Device. No explanation needed. Buy this stuff already so I can go back to testing! Those man-eating plants I've got in the testing chambers aren't going to feed themselves!
  • I bought BF3 Premium for $25 at Walmart... Hard to beat that price for the most realistic military shooter on consoles. I usually don't buy DLC (I remember the days of proper expansion packs), but I pretty much got all 5 map packs for free!
  • Go Halo!

  • I bought Sniper Elite V2, MoH Warfighter, and Lego LotR today.

  • Got my Wii U and two games (so far). A *** LOAD of PSVita games and some egg nog. Grand day indeed ;-)
  • Seeing as how halo 4 and blops 2 weren't discounted only one I picked up was assassins creed

  • Not to be "that guy", but im a newer youtuber and ive got about 72 videos. This is my newest one, I hate to do this kinda thing, but this is the only way to get the name out there. Heres a link and I hope that you enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57-6xg8p_bE
  • I bought the White Vita bundle. :) And thanks to my Playstation Plus membership I already have 6 free games to play on it (not including AC Liberation that it comes with). SO HAPPY. Sony is really fantastic. Just amazing.
  • I got Sleeping Dogs, Rayman Orgins, Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Winter Games, and Driver: San Francisco this Black Friday.

  • Got the white 4 gig 360 w/Skylanders (for the family) almost 24 hrs after Walmart started their black friday. There was still a whole stack of 'em. Maybe nobody wanted them because of the small HDD, but it's ok b/c I already had an expansion. There was also a stack of Wii's... if only they had a black one... I would've gotten one of those too.

Originally I went in to check if they still have the first Darksiders for PS3 but they didn't :(

Yup, I'm not too crazy about black friday, I try to skip the crowd and check for leftovers. Plus I had to work all day anyways XD
