Reader Discussion: What’s The Best Food Reference In A Video Game?

It’s almost Thanksgiving, and that means food. Lots of food. Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, pumpkin pie – if you like eating, this is the holiday for you.

But we’re not the only ones who look forward to some grub. Our video game heroes need sustenance as well. So we’re asking you to tell us about your favorite food-related moments, appearances, and situations in games.

Maybe you have fond memories of a certain wizard who “needs food badly” in Gauntlet? Or perhaps Chell’s unending search for cake in Portal is more your thing. And what exactly is in those mushrooms that Mario is always eating?

Wrack your brain, delve into your gaming memories, and tell us in the comments below about the food that was more than just a meal in one of your favorite (or least favorite) video games.

  • Lon Lon Milk FTW! Growing children in Hyrule need strong bones. More importantly, it comes in a bottle that is more valuable than the milk itself!
  • The strange sandwich in Deadly Premonition.
  • Potal's "the cake is a lie" is so funny, at the beginning the robot says that you get cake if you make it through, and at the end of the game you see a picture of cake. then in the second, the voice says "when life gives you lemons you make lemonade," but later in the game he says, "you know, when life gives you lemons, you make life take the lemons back.
  • Sweetrolls in Skyrim. I am still looking for the thief.
  • sweet roll in Skyrim.

  • "The Lie" achievement in Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition. It's a reference inside a reference! Genius!
  • Why, the Temjin Burgar from Overblood 2 of course! Everything you need to know about that game is encapsulated in the moment where you stumble across a burger joint with Santa Claus as its mascot, which sells $50 horsemeat burgars or $500 bananas.
  • The Heavy's sandwich in TF2.
  • Green Herbs. Those are food, right?

Edit: There were also those tomatoes you could smack in RE5. Those were neat.

Edit Edit: Oh, and the MOA BURGERS from Halo: Reach. Can't forget that overlooked joke.
  • Juggernog its a drink that has saved countless lives.
  • Those dam poison mushrooms in Super Mario Bros 2: The Lost Levels. In the original Famicon version, it is hard to differentiate between the poison and regular mushrooms.
  • Definitely "the cake is a lie"

  • The other option would be the alcohol from Bulletstorm. In my family the drinking often outweighs the eating.

  • Fully cooked turkeys found in the trash on the mean Streets of Rage 2.
  • Cake is a lie. Just the saying alone make me hungry for cake.

  • Why... why would you bring out the people who would make cake references?

Well, I guess I'll go hiding now. Frankly though, I like it when games include watermelons that can be broken. Gallagher must have been involved with Half-Life 2 and Timesplitters....

  • Totally forgot: any food item from River City Ransom!

    Classics.
  • I always loved the fruit in Pacman
