BioWare Considering Mass Effect Prequel

The original Mass Effect trilogy may be over, but there will be more games for the franchise. With news that BioWare Montreal is taking over the next game, series' executive producer Casey Hudson is asking fans for their input.

In a tweet Hudson asked, "Parsing through your thoughts on the next #ME game. Would you be more interested in a game that takes place before the trilogy, or after?"

What do you think?

Last week BioWare confirmed that the developer's Montreal location would be developing the next title in the franchise.

  • I'd prefer a prequel. Then after it flops, Disney can buy the franchise and give it new life in a sequel.
  • It seems like everyone is doing a trilogy these days and then opting for a prequel before pushing ahead with the story (looking at your Gears and Halo... What's next? A Dead Space prequel? Or maybe we'll go back even further in Assassin's Creed instead of seeing the results of Desmond's choice). We already know what has happened in the past more or less, granted there is plenty of room for a game and exploring that past, but I'd be much more interested in a game set long after the original trilogy that explores the future. Especially with how the ending of ME3 raised a lot of interesting questions.
  • Sequel please, I want the story to move forward.
My wishes for the next Mass Effect: http://www.gameinformer.com/blogs/members/b/kagehoshi-_blog/archive/2012/11/09/my-wishes-for-the-new-mass-effect.aspx

Quick summary if you don't want to click:
Imagine it human, you have been playing as a drell space pirate on an old outdated but heavily modified stolen turian warship. You lead your crew on what should be an easy mission to hijack a civilian vessel carrying some semi-valuable cargo, but when your crew disables and boards the ship after meeting unusually heavy resistance, you find something that should not be there... turns out the ship was a disguised military vessel carrying top secret cargo. You and your crew get dragged into a vast political conspiracy threatening the galaxy as you know it, and more importantly your profits a pirate.

Imagine space battle gameplay being added in addition to the 3rd person shooting, boarding and stealing ships. Being hunted by the human Alliance forces, the turian Meritocracy's forces, the salarian STG forces, the batarian hegemony forces, the Citadel spectres, and basically all military forces from the Mass Effect universe all while trying to save it from a conspiracy that threatens it. Other shadowy groups like remnants of Cerberus, merc groups, warlords could also play a large role in the conflict

The actual secret cargo could be a weapon developed from dead reaper tech that uses a mass effect field somehow to generate massive black holes each capable of wiping out a solar system.
  • Make a new IP!
  • That would be cool. More raw with bullets and not futuristic weapons.
  • Well, a prequel would guarantee travel in the game I guess!!!! Wait, did the extra endings prevent the destruction of all the Relays?!?! Why the heck did they make the ending of ME3 so terrible? Its really mind blowing what the hell they were thinking. Yet, it got 10s as being PERFECTION in game form. Jezzus!!!
  • That would be cool. I've always enjoyed their gameplay. Though I wonder who the new protagonist would be? Maybe Garrus?
  • (SPOILERS) Future would be difficult, because there would either be Shepard-Reaper Benevolent Overlords, No Geth, or everyone would be green. One of them would have to be Canon, which would take a big part out of the first 3 games. Prequal would be easier, but they've only got about 30 years to work with if they want to include humans.
  • It's almost impossible to make a sequel based on the completely different outcomes without coming up with an extremely contrived excuse or a bunch of hand-waving. A prequel doesn't sound very promising either, considering there's not a lot of timelines they can choose other than being far in the past where are choices would actually matter. I'd much rather that Bioware work on a new IP before making another sequel.
  • After investing hours into the trilogy, I want a sequel. If you are going to do a prequel, do it the same way the Dead Space series has done it.
  • mass effect has a prequel it's called KOTOR.
  • here's an idea bioware JADE EMPIRE 2!!!!!!!!
  • But seriously, I REALLY want to see something different from Bioware. I know Mass Effect is robust and everything but it's time to visit a new universe. When was the last time Bioware made a new IP?
  • New main protagonist?
  • A prequel would be cool but it would have to be something that isn't already in the ME universe history. I'm sure they would do it anyways since anything afterwards would probably just seem like an afterthought and not make sense or it would do something like Halo 4 and make there be an even larger threat to the galaxy. Actually, they could just move the setting to another galaxy and do everything new.
  • I think a prequel would be better. They should really jump on the Spectre story line with different characters.

  • Casey Hudson asks fans for creative input? Wouldn't that compromise 'artistic integrity' he was so proud of while EVERYONE hated ME3 ending? Leviathan DLC pushed the Synergy ending so forcefully it was laughable, so it's safe to assume it will be canon. Since all diversity in the galaxy is gone, most respected and honored hero - dead and oh, not to forget all mass relays destroyed ('severely damaged') I wonder what epic story could they come up with. Oh... right. NOW they ask for fan input after they've shot themselves in the foot with ME3 ending? With this I actually would like to see sequel to ME trilogy. You screwed up - now suffer. It's funny how with 20 minutes of gameplay you can kill a cow and then you still try to milk it.
  • more weapons and fight!

  • It's really difficult since I have no idea who the protagonist would be in a prequel, obviously not Shepard. Maybe Shepard's father, but that would conflict with the space orphan backstory thingy. But I don't want a sequel since I feel that era is done, although I would love to see the next ME set a couple of hundred years after ME3 making reference to the Shepard legend.
  • I prefer they just leave the Mass Effect title alone. Just make a new type of game with a NEW name. As a big fan of bio-ware and the trilogy some things are better just left alone. Just my opinion
