What's Happening

It Costs $0.50 To Register A Minor On The Wii U

The small fee technically makes the Wii U's online services not entirely free, but it's a way to confirm that a guardian is truly approving registration instead of a lying 12 year old.

The fee is there so that Nintendo is compliant with COPPA, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. Parent's only have to pay the fee once if they are registering multiple children under the age of 13, and the credit card information is not stored on the console or online.

You can head to the Wii U's support page to find out more the fee.

  • I suppose that explains why you're forced to provide credit card information to make free accounts on other consoles, as well. I'm glad they don't store it, then. It's a huge pain to get that stuff wiped from your LIVE account.
  • CLEVER!
  • .........Nintendo......

  • Because I'm sure the 12 year old bought the console himself. This is kinda stupid.
  • Less *** drawings? I wonder how moderation will ensue about drawing inappropriate things. Does Nintendo watch are every move?
  • I dont think that is a bad idea, at least its not alot of money and it will protect alot more children. Well Im just glad im now 13 so it doesnt look like I would have to pay.
  • That's interesting and weird.

  • Couldn't the minor just put themselves down as born in 1950 or something if they wanted to get around it anyways...?
  • Guys I was born on January 1st, 1800
  • I think the point that a lot of comments are missing is that Nintendo did this in order to be compliant with COPPA. Not because they think it'll actually be effective.
  • How about this (for future systems). Each system comes with a proprietary syringe and a "DNA scanning doc". You jam the syringe into one of your veins and take a bunch of blood out. Put the syringe in the scanning doc, and then the system will know your age. *you can only get the syringe with the system, only one syringe will work per system, and syringes can never be cleaned*
  • Thats actually a good idea.

  • Why fifty cents? Why not a penny if it's just a formality? Why not refund the money after?
  • its a good idea but kinda odd...

  • Ha! Good call Nintendo!
  • At least the security is better than PSN.
  • ahahahahaha!!

  • What the hell?

  • Let the money roll on in.

  • I guess that's one way to handle it.
