The lights are on
Activision has announced that its Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has earned the company more than $500 million worldwide in the first 24 hours the game was made available. According to the company, that makes it the biggest entertainment launch of the year.
"With first day sales of over half a billion dollars worldwide, we believe Call of Duty is the biggest entertainment launch of the year for the fourth year in a row," said Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard's CEO. "Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for "Harry Potter" and "Star Wars," the two most successful movie franchises of all time. Given the challenged macro-economic environment, we remain cautious about the balance of 2012 and 2013."
The game was released on November 13, and there's no doubt that it will continue to sell like mad during the holiday season. That's great news for multiplayer fans, who won't have to wait long to find other players eager to take them on.
Halo 4 was released a week earlier, and it sold through more than $220 million in its first 24 hours. Considering it's only available on the Xbox 360, as opposed to Call of Duty's multiplatform approach, that's not too shabby either.

Wow! I thought sales would start dropping by now but they just keep on going. Activision must be making sooooo much moneyz.
It's a shame, because the majority of that is bandwagon. BO 2 is good, but not that good- and certainly not as good as MW2 or BO 1...
It's funny how most of the comments about CoD are hater comments but it's still the most popular crap on earth. Also funny how GI gave Black Ops Desclassified a horrible review but its ads are all over Gameinformer.
Black Ops 2 is probably my favorite since the first Modern Warfare (which is second only to Call of Duty 2 imo)
ok now...calm down activision. slow down with the sequels or youll end up like halo. =P i give activision props, they are all shivering in blops2 shadow. imitation is the sincerest form of flattery
I stopped playing Cod after mordern warfare 2,mostly due to its soul being yanked out by activision after the Infinity ward scandal. Im playing Halo 4 and Battle field 3 for multiplayer and i couldnt be happier.
I said the hell with the first Black ops and went with Fable III and Fallout New Vegas. This time around I grabbed Darksiders II, Borderlands 2 and Assassin's Creed III. Halo sucks and people only Black Ops only because of the name. My next game I'm getting is Dead Island Riptide and after that hopefully a new Fallout game is released.
Not surprised at all. I have seen some footage and it looks very fun though. I just am not going to shell out more money for a new CoD every year, sorry Activision.
Oh Activision, please...just let the game series die already! It's becoming the exact same game over and over and over again!
See this is what it'll be like if all of the sudden pay day laced their bars with weed. They then continued to change the ingredients of said candy bar 14 times. You take a seemingly average product and you please the simplest, most unintuitive parts of our brains and BAM! Continuous success. That does not mean the game is at it's core, a "good" game.
it is very well deserved. this game is good with a good story...BUT this engine needs to be updated for god sakes lol...
*sigh*...there are so many shooters out there that deserve this kind of loyalty and respect. Wondering when the masses will wizen up and come to terms with a 'quality' shooter. Or when they realize it's nothing more than a different 4 hour campaign, 'change' to multiplayer and the 'new' zombies everyone is changing pants for.
Wow. I guess I'm gonna have to buy this!
