In Honor Of His Birthday, Share Your Favorite Miyamoto Memories

We forgot to get him a present, but you can help wish Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto a happy 60th birthday by leaving him a message in this reader discussion.

Mr. Miyamoto is the most legendary game designer in the history of the industry. As the creator of Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, and Star Fox, he singlehandedly helped reshape the game industry in the '80s and '90s.

What's your favorite memory from a Miyamoto game? What would you say to him if you had the chance to meet him? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

(By the way, his birthday is on November 16. Though this story shows a November 15 time stamp, it's already the 16th in Japan, so let's get this party started)

  • Just everything. Everything this man has touched. Happy Birthday Miyamoto. You are the Jesus of gaming.

EDIT: HOLY #@*$!!! My birthday is the day after Miyamoto's! Why couldn't I have been born a day earlier? T.T
  • Happy Birthday Shiggy! I'd thank him for all the great memories of my childhood, all the great games he has created, A Link To The Past which imo is the epitome of Zelda games.
  • Anything and everything The Legend of Zelda. Thanks Miyamoto for creating such an epic and legendary series and wowing gamers for years. Happy birthday and thank you for all of the magnificent, fond memories. Most importantly, thank you for making me a gamer.
  • If every midget in the world had one candle, then they would have candles. I still wouldn't.
  • I love when people tell me "I know it's weird, but" Because I always reply with "You're talking to the guy who idolizes a 60-year-old japanese man". Best response ever? yes. Best game designer and most influential person to ever set foot in the video game industry? you better believe it.
  • When he was trying to show off Skyward Sword at E3. It was a bit embarrassing for him, but seeing my idol playing while talking about one of my favourite franchises ever, one that he had created, still made me happy.

  • I can't wait Kojima's birthday.

  • My favorite Miyamoto memory is when I interviewed him and he told me the story of how he performed a testicular cancer exam on a bull. (pictured above)
  • When I first played the original Super Mario Bros. When I was younger, I was four and my father was almost 30 and we played a game to see who went the longest. My Mario got to World 4-2 and my father's Luigi only got to World 1-3. From then on, my father and I spent countless hours trying to further our score. Thank God for Miyamoto and his creations.

  • Almost any... no... ANY game he has made that I've had the great experience of playing has been a magical and enriching experience! My favorites have got to be Legend of Zelda and Pikmin though, the genius put into those is astronomical. Happy Birthday Miyamoto!
  • I remember being 10yrs old in 94, after weeks and months of trying, I will never forget Link picking up the tri force in A Link To the Past. The conclusion and the music score defined me as a Zelda fan and longtime Nintendo fan. Very soon my 6 year old will tackle that game, after he beats Super Mario Bros. U that is. - - oh, happy birthday bro!
  • My favorite memory is when his creations instantly changed my life forever. There will never be another Miyamoto. I didn't even know immortal beings celebrated birthdays.
  • Zelda. Zelda. Zelda. Zelda. Zelda. Zelda. Zelda. Zelda. Zelda. Zelda. Did I forget to mention Zelda?

EDIT: Happy birthday to the man who, not only single handily revived the gaming industry, but also created by far some of the best video games that has ever existed. EVER.
  • Miyamoto technically saved my life. Not gonna go into details, but I will say that. Best dude ever.
  • Though it isn't my favorite Zelda game by quite a bit, that time Miyamoto came out on stage with the Master sword and Hylian shield at E3 2004 when they unvealed Twilight Princess was pretty memorable.
  • You created the single greatest video game franchise of all time. Thank you for the The Legend of Zelda. Happy 59th birthday Miyamoto.
  • Well, Happy Birthday to Mr. Miyamoto!

No idea what I'd say to a man like that. I love every series you listed, Matt. The Legend of Zelda is easily my favorite game series of all time.

  • I wish Miyamoto a very happy day, as Legendary as the Legend of Zelda, as Epic as the Mario series, as Huge as the impact of his way of thinking have been in the gaming industry and I will also thank him and Nintendo for creating media that bridges the gap between generations and providing the ground and means for many parents to bond with their children through the games, specially for parents who know not much to show their soft spot ^_^ A BIG HAPPY BIRTH DAY AND A BIGGER THANK YOU!!! !!! !!!
