Wii U Won't Have System-Wide Achievements

It appears Nintendo's new console won't have a mandatory achievement-style system like Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360. Jeremiah Slaczka, co-founder of 5th Cell, said it's up to the developers to add achievements to their Wii U games. 5th Cell developed Scribblenauts Unlimited for the console's launch on Sunday, November 18.

"There are no Wii U accomplishments that are system wide," Slaczka said on NeoGAF. "They are up to the developers to include or not include. Scribblenauts Unlimited loosely has them in the form of 'Global Starite Shards' which is like a giant checklist of global things to spawn and do in the game that aren't area specific."

Slaczka did note, however, this could change in the future. "The Miiverse is in its infancy. Just think how much the PS3/360 dashboard and store changed to meet people's needs. I'm sure Nintendo will do plenty of updates and new integration of systems as time goes on."

  • WHAT?! Just another reason why the WiiU is a waste of money.
Edit: I meant no offense to anyone who would want to buy a WiiU, but in my opinion there is nothing the WiiU offered I couldn't get on my Xbox or PS3 besides first party games (which I have my N64 for) and I see no reason to buy a THIRD same gen console when the next gen consoles are about to come out in a matter of a few years or less.
  • Good. I'd rather not force devs to include them.
  • No big diffrence for me. Only had a Wii for years, so im fine without achivments.
  • I know the lot of you are into achievements/trophies, but I never really cared too much for em.
Of course, I don't mind them, but I'm not going to lose my **** if I don't have them.
either way, I'm still gonna try to beat my games 1000%.
  • Well ok than

  • And nothing of value was lost. It's fun to feel accomplished, and sometimes they give me an idea of something new to try, but I seriously don't care at all that WiiU doesn't have achievements.
  • This is really disappointing.
  • It's okay that it's not required, but it seems kind of like a missed opportunity to not try and compete with what is already existent on competitor's consoles. Why would they not want to implement what is essentially standard issue by now?
  • I would love to have achievments to all nintendo games :D Would be awesome to have achivments to a zelda game.
  • It's ok that the achievements aren't system wide, then each game dev can decide exactly what kind of reward the player gets...
  • Ehhhh...not a deal breaker, but still a little disappointing. The achievement/trophy systems just seem so natural now.
  • Not really necessary feature, though i think ys a good reason to juice your games and compete with your friends

  • Disappointing. I actually enjoy going after the occasional achievement. Haven't been a hunter since the ol' 200k acount quit on me, but I still enjoy getting them.

  • Your doing it wrong Nintendo.
  • I am excited about the wii you, nintendo ,in my opinion, makes the most unique systems out there Xbox and playstation are normal but nintendo is well unique, like with the motion controllers they innovated there just like they are with the tablet I will give it to xbox about kinect but ps move is a clear copy of the wii controller I am really excited about the wii U and I hope I can get one for christmas, idc about the achievements
  • Yeah I dont really play games for dem achievements anyways. As long as the game is great than it's worth playing over and over again.

  • This seems like a bad decision by Nintendo.  One of many relating to this new console (the biggest of which is the name, which makes it seem like an add-on and not a new console).

  • stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid. I guess it kind of makes sense for Nintendo but the whole point of Wii U was branching out to hardcore gamers and thats not how to do it
