BioWare Montreal Developing New Mass Effect

Mass Effect 3 was the end of Commander Shepard's story, but BioWare and EA have made no secret of the fact that they don't want Mass Effect to end. Executive producer Casey Hudson has already hinted at things to come, but today we got a few concrete details about the series' next step.

In a post on the BioWare blog, BioWare Montreal studio director Yanick Roy confirmed that the next installment is coming from his studio. BioWare's Edmonton office took the lead role on the previous titles, but Montreal has been working on the franchise for years in a supporting role, developing DLC and even the excellent multiplayer component of Mass Effect 3.

Details are scarce, but we do know that the new Mass Effect game incorporates the tech behind DICE's Frostbite 2 engine. "There is really not much I can tell you about the game right now," Roy says. "Except that it will be built with the amazing technology of Frostbite as its foundation, enhanced by many of the systems that the Dragon Age III team has already spent a lot of time building."

Beyond the confirmation of the game and where it is being developed, don't expect more info anytime soon. Roy says that it will be "quite a while" before more news from studio surfaces.

  • Mass Effect is one of my favorite series from this generation. I'm very excited for a new game!
  • Excited for this. Can't wait to see it on the Xbox Infinity/720.
  • I know I'll be a sucker for anything Mass Effect, even the movie if and when it comes out.  Bring it on!

  • Hopefully, it's a next gen launch title, or at least within the launch year. I wonder if they're going to do another series like the originals.
  • Hmmmm.... Wonder if they will do the whole FPS/'stick you in the grunt's boots' deal or stick with the RPG/'Do your own thing' path.
  • We'll see how they develop the world that was prior to the Mass Effect games.
  • I wish I could be excited for this.

  • Off topic: is anyone here a digital subscriber? If so can you please tell me the score black ops 2 got? Thank you !
  • Guessing its next gen.
  • Cooooooooool.....

  • I'm excited to see what new tech they use from the Dragon Age III team.

  • Strange, I was expecting them to upgrade to the Unreal engine 4 for the sake of keeping things the same, but Frostbite is good too I guess. It will be interesting to see that engine do something besides drab and generic middle eastern settings for a change.

Interested to see where they take the series next, especially considering it's using Frostbite 2.
  • Mass Effect using Frostbite? Interesting...
  • Looking forward to it.

  • Why do I feel like this will be FPS......if it is.....goodbye ME...it was a great ride but I can't get behind a ME FPS...
  • Frostbyte 2... ****!!!
  • Come on let's play as a krogan during and after the arachnid wars!
  • Not sure I'm ever going to play another Mass Effect title again. There's a slim possibility that I will, but it's VERY slim.
  • This kind of worries me. I don't want a mindles FPS in the Mass Effect universe. This series is better than that.
