BioWare Sets Star Wars: The Old Republic Free-to-Play Date

If you've been holding off of playing the MMO, now might be the time to jump in for free.

The Old Republic goes free on November 15, although if you're already a paying member, you'll get all of the complimentary Cartel coins for use in the microtransaction shop based on your playing time (check out the Cartel Coin Ledger page to see how many coins you've earned), as well as a free lump sum of 250 coins. Lapsed players who used to pay for the game can also get back in and receive coins for their prior work if they join before December 20, 2012.

For more info on the transition, check out this info from the summer.

  • That's pretty cool! Maybe I'll try it out around December, with the WiiU coming out and all I'm a little stacked right now.

  • I might give it a try after I finish up my thief in GW2, which may be like a year with the spare time I have now lol

  • nice

  • Still does not change the fact that 300 million was wasted on this CRAPFEST and that they should have just made KOTOR 3,AND Jade Empire 2 but they just wanted to try an easy money grab scheme and failed. Now that Disney owns star wars they might hire some REAL Devs to create Kotor 3.I hope Biowar/devil ea have learned their lesson.(most likely NOT).

Sorry for multi post.i tried deleting them but cant.
  • Who cares about the old republic?! Bring on GTAV!!

It's a great game. I hope this move saves it.
  • well, I know when to get a computer that can run this. I've been dying to play this since launch, but couldn't run it. Now I can...

  • Cool! I've been replaying KotOR the last few days, so I should be ready for this.

  • This could get me back into this a little bit. I played it right when it came out, but it is just basically Star Wars skinned WoW. It's fun and very well made, but I'm not willing to pay monthly for something that I played for 4 years before TOR even released.
  • Being free to play won't change the fact that the game is boring as hell.
  • I let my subscription lapse months ago (read: February) for lack of free time, but now that I have a new PC that would be able to handle this game with a respectable framerate, I might have to give it another shot.

The tough part is going to be tearing myself away from AC3.
  • I'll probably log in a few days after that and then play around with it in December when I become less unglued to Persona 4 Golden.

  • i want star wars galaxies II i want star wars galaxies II i want star wars galaxies II i want star wars galaxies II ....did i say i want star wars galaxies II.. "keep dreaming".. yeah but that will not take me over to old boring republic... why? cause i want star wars galaxies II.. guess what swg lived 8yrs paid subscribtions to the end... it should have not been shut down.. i will rage until the end of time until i see it resurrected!...RAGE on!
  • I love how this "Going free-to-play" article is right above the upcoming Elder Scrolls mmo. Why are subscriptions still going on???
  • COOL!

  • I honestly think this game would do so much better on consoles. Look at DC Universe Online, it has more members on the PS3 than it does on the PC version.
  • The fact that the game is incredibly average should probably be mentioned.  Along with everyone else, I only have a limited amount of time I can dedicate to gaming and with that 'time' I will want to spend it on quality games not particulary 'free' games.  I'm sorry but Star Wars The Old Republic just isn't a quality game in relation to other titles that have been released or are soon to be released.  Hello GTA V.

  • *yawns* Another Windows exclusive MMO... give me a call when they decide to let Mac users join the party.
  • ...And still there since day 3 of launch. I am fine, and both the servers and content have improved. Since I am a subscriber going to end up with loads of cartel coins, I'm gonna focus on HK and get rocket boost.

  • I'll probably hop on and finish my main's character story.  That's about it.
