Diablo III Has An Expansion Plan

Diablo III has sold over 10 million units to date, so of course Blizzard is looking to keep fans engaged. The publisher confirmed today it has an "expansion plan" for the game.

"We do have an expansion plan for [Diablo III]. I don’t have any timeline to talk about," Blizzard president Michael Morhaime said today on an investor call. "I think the most important thing for us always comes down to the quality of the expansion and the gamplay, so that will be a big factor in terms of driving our schedule."

Blizzard released expansions for its previous Diablo games. Diablo II: Lord of Destruction released in 2000 and Diablo: Hellfire in 1997 from Sierra On-Line.

  • Uhh, first perhaps...? I think they should worry about PvP first and then get to the expansion plan.
  • My gaming desktop is in sight, more than halfway there...Diablo 3 Collector's Edition has been on my desk unused for months...it's so close! And expansion!

  • Well duh.

  • sweet baby jesus! yes!

  • This game's somewhere up there on my backlog. If they're doing expansions, maybe I'll wait for a GOTY edition. Wonder what they'll call it. Probably will have "Hell" or "Die" or something similar in there.
  • I ran through Diablo III once, so hopefully an expansion is focused on making the initial playthrough awesome. Rather than designed to keep you replaying it over and over.
  • Looks good, though I've never played a Diablo game before. I guess now that I've got my new graphics card, I should give it a shot.
  • going to be so awesome, really exciting

  • My mouth is agape. I could not have foreseen this coming.
  • Expansion plan: continue to reactively respond to fan complaints by adding in features that should've been present to begin with and try to add in content quickly enough to keep players occupied and distracted from the fact that the game is nowhere near what was expected or promised.

  • They're way too late. They released a game lacking in depth and highly imbalanced and now that they've fixed most of those issues over a long period of time, they're deciding it's time to make more with no mention as to what that will be?
  • dont believe the hype.. 10 million units sold. however no where near that many players online. the game is a failure and their plans are to release fixes and content that should have been in place at start.. gotta say it Acti-blizzard has fallen by the way side with diablo 3.. the RMAH, lack of having blizzard north talent around tanked the game.. torchlight is much much better cause those are the guys that made D2.. i think they knew it would tank without them. so in the year 2014 we'll get an expansion by then ... sorry i'll wait for SOE's announcement of Star Wars Galaxies II.. instead.
  • Two weeks of my life i cant get back and they want me to spend more? Unlikely.

  • Seeing as how it was a halfassed game to begin with, I'm not surprised. I however am done with blizzard, their product quality assurance has dropped severely since the days of Diablo 2. Runic games has me covered.
  • Torchlight 2 is out now so... yeah, I don't care. =P
  • Diablo 3 was one of those games that i played alot at first, but then it lost it's appeal and i have yet to return to it, i hope this can drag me back in.
  • Alas Diablo 3 was such a wreck it made me lose all respect for a company i once though infallible. They will never be receiving green pieces of paper from me again.

  • I REALLY LIKE DIABLO 3 SO GOOOOOOD!

  • im hoping they bring back diablos brothers and make them even tougher and harder to kill
  • There will be an expansion, but they're going to wait ten more years to release it to make sure people are still committed to the Diablo franchise.
