The lights are on
THQ announced South Park: The Stick of Truth has been delayed. The game was originally scheduled for release on March 5, 2013. The game has been pushed to early fiscal 2014. THQ's 2014 fiscal year begins April 2013 and ends March 2014. [Update: THQ said the title has been delayed 2 months]
Company of Heroes 2 and Metro: Last Light are both planned to ship in March 2013.
Below is a statement about the delay from THQ president Jason Rubin:
When I joined THQ the company made a public commitment to quality titles. We always expected that in some cases this would mean that more time would be needed to make sure that every title is of the highest possible quality. Our fourth quarter releases are the first titles that I have had the ability to materially impact, and experience told me that the games needed additional development time to be market-ready.
I believe South Park’s market opportunity is significant. It is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated titles of calendar 2013. It is also an expansive title, encompassing multiple television seasons’ worth of content. We have been working closely with the co-creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, to make sure all of the game’s content performs to the high standards of the TV show, and this takes time. THQ is committed to giving gamers no less than the rich South Park game they have been waiting for and deserve.
We are also inspired by the potential for Metro: Last Light and Company of Heroes 2. I believe Metro: Last Light is a title that should set standards for visuals with its stunning atmosphere, unique location and cutting-edge style. Company of Heroes was one of the highest rated RTS titles in history, and Relic insists that the sequel live up to its pedigree. Giving both of these titles time to reach their full potential is the right thing to do for the products.
THQ is excited about our position and pipeline of games beyond fiscal 2013, including the sequel for Saints Row: The Third, Homefront 2 and the as-yet-unannounced game from Turtle Rock Studios. In total we have ten titles in development for fiscal 2014 and later, almost all of which are based on our own IP. We intend to announce more details about our future slate in the coming months.
I firmly believe releasing our fourth quarter titles without extra time for polish in the current environment would lead to underperformance that could in turn lead to future additional capital shortfalls. But extending development schedules in order to make the best possible titles also has financial implications. Yet there can be no doubt which path has the greatest chance of leading to the long-term success of the company. We must follow the course that generates the highest quality games, and will establish THQ as a mark of quality for the consumer.
oh well, at ;east its not delayed indefinatly.
I don't claim to be an expert, but this seems to be a good sign to me. By pushing the game back to the next quarter, THQ seems to be indicating that they have a great deal of confidence in the South Park game, and hope to boost the first quarter 2014 sales with it.
Then again, I don't know a whole lot about business, so I could just be whistling Dixie.
Release it when it's ready, who cares if it takes an extra couple months or an extra year (Bioshock Infinite) as long as it's ready. I'll be there to pick it up as long as GI doesn't drop a sub-6.0 review on it.
Holy lord that's an awful delay...
Wow, more than half that announcement is advertising other THQ titles. The info about south park is summed up in a single sentence. And if they need another YEAR to work on this game it must be going through serious redesign.
Aww man I had this game pre-ordered and everything. As a huge SP fan this one of the games I was really looking forward to and now it's been pushed back another year. Sad day.
I want to preorder this game, but I have a hard time committing to something that won't commit to me :( I need dates people, set in stone dates!!!!
Wow, great job on the explanation Jason! I for one greatly appreciate it when a publisher(or developer) gives a thorough and honest(sounding) reasoning for such things.
I think Jason Rubin will do a great job with THQ, I predict that in five years many people will have forgotten that they were ever in as much strife as they have been lately.
thank you for being smart THQ
Most unfortunate, was really looking forward to this game. Hope they get things figured out soon and an exact date reestablished.
Wow, isn't this the 2nd time this game was pushed back. Well as long as it wasn't a last minute push back I don't mind. As long as they don't pull a Square-Enix on us and push it back a few years over and over again. *cough* FF Versus 13 *cough*
It's ok. Make it right...
If it's in the middle of the year, it might be better for some of us anyway. There are a lot of good games coming out 1st Q.
AAAARRRGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Expletive expletive double negative expletive!!! RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!!!
This seriously pisses me off!
I am really looking forward to this game. Take your time, make it great.
How will this game work out if next-gen consoles will be annonced by then (proboly)
I'll believe it when I see it.
Shame it has to be delayed again but still, when this game comes out, I bet its going to be on par with Castle Crashers.
I can wait for this game.
Jesus Asterisk Christ, Stan! People are feeling really cheated by this!
No doubt we're all chomping on the bit to have a suitable homage to South Park that doesn't suck balls. But, I dunno... I don't trust something that bleeds for 5 months and just doesn't die. This thing will release just before the new generation console (hopefully it will be cross-compatible and awesome-O, dudes and dudettes!)
I'll wait for this game. I'm actually glad THQ is busting Obsidian's hump over this - every thing they ever shipped has lacked polish, and it's annoying. Sometimes, it's much worse than merely annoying, as is the case with Alpha Protocol, where if it were managed better they would've caught some brutal, fatal flaws in that game.
I just hope stupid Project Eternity isn't distracting Obsidian from making sure South Park is amazing. Yeah, I gave 'em $5 for that project, and it's important they get to do what they want, but South Park comes first. Finish that up, and then turn your attention away to your old school passion project.
