Which Halo Is The Best Halo?

It's a simple question. Which Halo game is the best Halo game? Obviously, the original Halo holds a special place in every Halo fan's heart. I had a permanent LAN setup exclusively for Halo at my house. My parents really loved all the late night yelling matches that accompanied every match.

Halo 2 came out while I was in college, and I would leave my dorm room door open for anyone to jump in my game who happened to pass by. Because of this, it seemed like there was always a Halo 2 game happening at all times.

I played quite a bit of Halo 3 and ODST, but I didn't log nearly as many hours in either as I did in Halo or Halo 2. I never actually played Halo Wars, or Halo Anniversary. RTS games just don't do much for me, personally and I wasn't interested in replaying the single player offerings of the original Halo. I was also disappointed that the multiplayer was just a map pack for Halo Reach.

While we're on the topic of Halo Reach, I think that one may be my favorite in the series. I had fallen off the Halo bandwagon a bit after being lukewarm on Halo 3. Halo Reach re-invigorated my fandom. Jumping online to play multiplayer became a nightly event for both my wife and I for about a month after release, and we played through the game on the Legendary difficulty together, something I had never felt the need to do in the previous Halos.

Of course, this might all change on Tuesday with the release of Halo 4.

What about you? What has been your favorite Halo experience to date?

  • As of right now, Halo 3. Really hoping Halo 4 takes its place.
  • Halo CE is my personal favorite. I spent countless of hours in high school doing LANs with friends and family. Also, the campaign is fantastic, I still go back to play the Library on legendary every once in a while.

Having played Halo4 at San Diego Comic-Con, I'm really hoping this decision will change in two days.

On the side note, I'd like to say that Halo Reach had the weakest MP of all the games. I know Halo 4 will have a much stronger outing in that category. The campaign for Halo Reach was still fantastic though!
  • Between Halo 1 or Halo 3's escapes are my most treasured moments. Especially riding 4 Ghosts thru the chaos in the end.... mmm-mmm! mighty fine times, indeed.
  • Halo: Combat Evolved is my favorite and Halo 3 is my least favorite as of now.
  • Reach. It had by far the best campaign that played out like a Shakespearean tragedy with vastly varying gameplay. Multiplayer got annoying sometimes w. armor lock but once you knew how to deal with people using it everything was fine. Plus Reach's Forge is vastly improved over Halo 3's forge and Bungie and 343i constantly threw fan made maps into matchmaking which was basically like free map packs.

    so like i said. Reach.
  • I don't really play Halo multiplayer, so going by the story, I would say Halo Combat Evolved. The introduction of the Flood sticks with me to this day.
  • Halo 2. Most fun I have ever had with a game.
  • 3 i loved how they made the leveling system 2 dimensional, with one skill based axis, and one playtime based axis, in stead of just a straight line like you get with most games. only getting xp when you win was also great because it encouraged actual teamwork.
  • for me....Every single damn one, My favorite series ever, asking this for me is like asking a parent who their favorite child is, I couldn't pick.

Edit: But if I was forced to pick one.....most definitely Halo: Combat Evolved, It introduced me to the fabulous world of Halo in 2001 when i was only 7
  • Reach is my favorite.

  • Halo 3. Reach was good, but Halo 3 wins because of Master Chief.
  • Can't tell you how many times I have considered this. My stock answer is Halo 2, but I feel that had the worst campaign of the original trilogy. Halo 3 is way up there as well, so probably one of those two. Reach is the worst (not counting Halo Wars, which I never played).
  • I'm actually particularly torn between 3 and Reach, however I really liked ODST for the story and atmosphere. I played 3 when my love for the series was at it's highest and I have tons of memories of spending all weekend playing custom games with friends with crazy gametypes and maps and everything. Reach though, has a more interesting story and it definitely gets points for being Bungie's last Halo game. I just don't have as many fond memories playing it. So in short, I feel that Reach is a better game but 3 will always have a place in my heart for all the fun I had playing it.
  • depends on the game mode IMO. For a campaign I always thought Halo 2 did it best. Putting you in the shoes of the enemy was a fantastic idea and really fleshed out the story. Its always difficult to be the good guy when you never understand the bad guy, as the Arbiter you discovered just how evil and corrupt the Covenant was. It felt good to kill a brute :) For multiplayer, its always gotten better. Halo Reach is my current favorite.

Also, Halo 2 had the greatest cliffhanger in history
"Master Chief, mind telling me what you're doing on that ship?" --"Sir. Finishing this fight."
    FTW
  • HALO REACH ftw. combat evolved being my least.
  • For multiplayer, I pick Reach. I like the armor customization and the armor abilities really make you feel like you aren't just another gun. But single player wise, I pick Halo 3. I bought it on release date, and played it through so many times I lost count. It was the first, and only, Halo game I could beat on Legendary by myself, and I thought the story elements really brought the whole trilogy together with a kick ass conclusion.
  • Combat Evolved hands down. I still own my copy; it's such an amazing game, and the Flood still scare me to this day.

  • I'll go with Combat Evolved.

  • 2 for me. its the only one I ever finished. played through about half of 3 with a friend on co-op, but then the semester ended and I switched schools. I've always wanted to finish it. Got Reach around launch, and still haven't finished it to this day. never played 1. To be honest, Halo has never really "stuck" with me. I realize that they are fantastic games and some of the best the FPS/multiplayer market have to offer, but it never truly clicked for me. But anyways, I'll say 2. Went back and beat it on Legendary and everything. One of the best games for Xbox imo
  • I would have to say... Halo 3
1 2 3 4 5 Next ... Last
