GameStop Opening Kid-Focused Stores

GameStop said today it's opening 80 brand-new stores across the country this holiday focused on kids and families. The Dallas Business Journal reports the new GameStop Kids carry E-rated video games and other accessories and toys, such as a 2-foot-tall talking  Star Wars Chewbacca and Skylanders backpacks.

“This is really a way for us to take share away from people who are in the toy business and have an expanded assortment,” says GameStop CEO Paul Raines.

GameStop says if the stores are a success the company will consider leaving them open past the holiday and possibly making them permanent. The first GameStop Kids opens Friday, October 26, at the Grapevine Mills Mall in Dallas, Texas.

  • Errr... I am conflicted....
  • I feel like parents who are buying games/toys for their kids will just get them at Target, Toys R Us, WalMart etc. along with all their other stuff instead of going to this specialty store...
  • I think it's a dumb idea, but I guess a kid specific part of the store would prevent bad parents who can't read from buying Naughty Bear for their kids. Or not.
  • That's not normal but excited for my little brothers and sisters who aren't quite ready for the more mature GameStop
  • So glad i dont work for them any more.
  • And they will still give you little for trade-ins. Poor kids, but mostly poor parents who actually payed for the games.
  • cool
  • Whatever floats your metaphorical boats.
  • I imagine this is just space made for Skylanders and the like. I suppose it's a good idea to take the kid to a game store just for them and it's easier to know what to get them, despite the fact that there are ratings on the box. I have a couple of friends in Dallas; I should ask them what it's like.
  • This sounds like an excellent way to go out of business.
  • this will help out Nintendo cause a lot of kids these days dont like Pokemon or Mario and are COD addicts.
  • Interesting. Does this mean that the other stores won't carry younger "kiddie" titles if this turns out to be a success? So I will have to shop at 2 different stores? Hypothetically. Seems like a company would want everything in one area, a "jack of all trades" type of deal.
  • The kids will complain that there aren't any good games, so it's kind of pointless.
  • What a relief. I just couldn't handle the regular GameStops. Disclaimer: I no longer shop at GameStop cause they done did me wrong.
  • Cant people just read the ESRB rating? Is it really that hard?
  • So now will they stop asking for my ID when I buy a T game?
  • What? That's retarded. People go to gamestop because they can buy games for themselves and kids. If you want toys, there's Toys'r'us!
  • Seems like it's probably not a bad idea. I see a lot of parents these days buying highly inappropriate games for their kids. No 10-year-old should be playing Call of Duty, God of War, or GTA. This would be a good way to help some parents make better choices for their kids.
  • Yeah, I remember how successful Kids R Us was... ... ...
  • that's awesome!
