Maine GOP Attacks Candidate For Playing World of Warcraft

by Matt Helgeson on Oct 04, 2012 at 02:30 PM

Apparently, some political operatives in Maine have decided that people who play World of Warcraft are unfit for office.

According to the news site Politico, Colleen Lachowicz, a Democratic candidate running for the Maine state senate against incumbent Sen. Tom Martin, has been the target of a mailing that is attempting to discredit her based on the fact that she plays World of Warcraft. Part of the release is reproduced above.

Lachowicz has blogged publicly about the fact that she plays and enjoys World of Warcraft. She plays as an orc assassination rogue named Santiaga. The Maine state GOP has started a site called Colleen's World that documents some of the sometimes inflammatory things she said online. Much of it has to do with her WoW playing, but other things are sometimes outrageous political statements.

However, in this mailing sent out to voters in her district, the GOP is clearly putting her gaming habits in the crosshairs, with text that reads, "Colleen Lachowicz spends hundreds of hours playing in her online world Azeroth, as an Orc Assassination Rogue named Santiaga." It later reads, "We need a Senator who lives in OUR world, not Colleen's World."

Obviously, we don't know much about these candidates or their positions on matters of policy. However, it's sad that Mrs. Lachowicz is being singled out for doing something that millions of responsible adults do every day: taking a break from our day to day stresses and blowing off a little steam in a video game.
