Kickstart The Old School Role-Playing Game

A cavalcade of industry veterans is convening to create a new game in the style of Wizardry, Bard’s Tale, and Ultima, and they’d like your help to make it happen.

Developer Loot Drop has announced a new Kickstarter project entitled Old School Role-Playing Game. At the head of the team are two longtime game creators. Brenda Brathwaite participated in the development of all the original Wizardry games, and Tom Hall was involved in the design of games like Commander Keen, Anacrhonox, and Doom. The rest of the 30+ developers at Loot Drop have worked on projects including Ultima, Dungeons & Dragons, Bard’s Tale, The Sims, and Mortal Kombat, to name a few.

Loot Drop promises in its pitch to craft a game befitting their title, with four-person character parties, skill progression, recruitable characters, and plenty of exploration and looting. And, like those classic computer RPGs some might remember, Loot Drop also plans to craft a cool set of goodies to include in the box of the game, akin to the old cloth maps and trinkets you’d sometimes find in those packages. In an interesting twist, the team is also promising a unique stretch goal for the project. If the game hits the $1.9 million mark of promised donations, Loot Drop will craft two complete games, one authored by Brathwaite and one by Hall.

Like all Kickstarter projects, this one remains purely in the realm of dreams and promises. But if you believe in the idea, and the talent behind it, head over to the Kickstarter page and give them a boost.

  • I like the name, it's on point.

  • Oh man, I'm gonna have SO MANY classic RPGs to play now that Kickstarter games have boomed.  Don't get me wrong, really excited about this.  Just...SO MANY GAMES.

  • For a mere 1.9 million dollars, we'll take your money and flee!

  • Consider It Done $$$

  • I funded Project Eternity a few weeks ago. I have a lot of hope for that project. I love Obsedian, I consider them to be one of the best RPG developers in the world. Not too sure about this one yet, I'll look into it though!

  • Fantastic idea.

  • Neat. Hopefully they're not going too old school and giving us no save feature!
  • Interesting....

  • It's really awesome that GI supports Kickstarter projects and all, and I bet the publicity really helps them- but why have you not featured PLANETARY ANNIHILATION yet??! It's already been funded, but it's essentially a remake of one of the orginal RTS games, Total Annihilation, but on a bigger and more epic scale!! I guess this proves just how much RTS gaming has died out :'c
  • Done.

  • i dnt think ill ever give money for a kickstarter

  • Man I hope this works. Bard's Tale is one of my favorite games of all time, and was THE game that got me into RPG's. I wish them all the luck in the world. I might just have to consider actually contributing to one these kickstarter projects now.....

  • Tom Hall is a legend. I wish he would be interested in making a new FPS like Doom and Quake - something with imaginative landscapes, creative weapons and awesome monsters instead of generic military gear, generic terrorists and generic bombed out cities.

I'm not a CRPG fan, but I might have to support this just because of Hall's involvement.

  • The concept is great, the games they worked on were fantastic BUT Their pitch was awful and they did not have a concrete concept to share. It did not seem focused at all and frankly i did not get confident vibes from them at all. I'd say donate the minimum and hope for the best.
  • old school maps, ultima D&D all together. look forward to playing some games.

  • Seeing Markus P. and David Jaffe's videos for this made me kickstart this; goodjob fellas.
