We Almost Got TimeSplitters 2 HD

Back when Free Radical still existed, the developer had a HD download version of TimeSplitters 2 in the works. The project was never released.

"We had a 'HD' downloadable version of TimeSplitters 2 in development at Free Radical in 2008," explained Steve Ellis, a former founder of the studio in an interview with Notenoughshaders. "I don’t know what happened to that but yes, I’d love to see it released at some point.

"Maybe it could be the catalyst that is required in order to raise enough interest in TimeSplitters 4 that a publisher might want to fund it."

Ellis now works at Crash Lab, a new studio he co-founded with two former Rare employees, Martin Wakeley and Lee Musgrave. Free Radical was purchased by Crytek in 2009 after going into financial administration and later renamed Crytek UK.

  • Wow....

  • Oh, how I miss this series. An HD collection would be awesome.
  • I wish I played this game back when PS2 was in its day.

  • Dang this is just suckish... Kinda like a Santa Claus fart.

  • Just gimme another TimeSplitters... Crytek said that no one would buy another one, that's why they're not working on TimeSplitters 4... I would buy it instead of the anual military shooter mud that's coming out these day... TimeSplitters had personality - that has become rare nowadays.
  • Screw you, Crytek...

  • I remember playing TimeSplitters 2 a long time ago and enjoying it quite a bit, so I'm sad to hear that we were so close to getting something else in the series. Also, I don't know if you could be a "former founder". Can you revoke status of being a founder of a studio?
  • TS 2 is probably my least favorite one. The first and third one are amazing, and really hope they make HD remakes of all of them

  • Ah, Timesplitters 2. I have fond memories of multiplayer madness after school. With colorful custom maps we'd get lost in more than killing each other in. If an HD version were to come out, I'd probably get it just for the nostalgia.

  • .......this industry confounds me sometimes.

  • This makes me soooo sad. I had an Atari in the early 80's and I can safely say that playing THIS game with friends was, hands down, the best communal video game experience of my life. Each week we would get together and my friend would make a new level to play (which took a whole memory card). So so so much fun was had.
  • News about TimeSplitters is always kind of depressing. I own the second one on the Gamecube, and the multiplayer was some of the most fun I've ever had in a video game. Nothing quite like having a buddy use the monkey and setting the little punk on fire!
  • I think I'd rather not have known how close this was...
  • Uh, yeah!  Release that soon!  I loved that game, and I rarely truly enjoy a FPS.  I played through that one a couple times, played through the challenges.  I had no complaints ever about it.

  • DARN IT!!!

  • timesplitters was by far one of the most entertaining sci-fi shooter especially for multi-player

  • Aww man, that would've been an awesome release. I love the Timesplitters series and would love to see any HD remake or a brand new game soon!

  • That would have been great nowadays for online.

  • I myself think this is the last great 4 player split screen co op game. Virus was so much fun. How I miss standing on a building shooting flaming green people as they scream bloody murder. Then selling out my buddy so that I win the game.
