The lights are on
You want classic X-Com strategy? You may get it with 2K Marin's XCOM, but perhaps not in the way you think.
2K Marin's XCOM – the one that was announced before Firaxis' version, and which was a first-person shooter – may be getting a gameplay overhaul, according to a rumor from Kotaku. A reader has sent in screens and info from a supposed market survey that now pitches the game as a third-person squad title in the vein of SOCOM or Star Wars: Republic Commando, where you give orders to squad mates.
The game was originally going to come out for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3, but the PC version is not mentioned in the materials, and they also inquire whether respondents would mind if the game was a $30 downloadable title instead of a $60 retail, boxed version.
Publisher 2K Games isn't commenting on the rumor, so we'll have to wait and see what new direction, if any, the game takes.

Clearly I know nothing about these games, but what's the difference between this game and XCOM Enemy Unknown that is coming out?
They should've just left it the way it was. Fans of the older games are already getting the other one... so what's the point of changing? Now i'm no longer interested.
Meh, I stopped paying attention to this game a while ago. I thought it looked cool, but it just kept changing to the point I couldn't keep track of it. Ah well, let's hope it doesn't get stuck in development hell.
Well that's an interesting development. I think I'll be satisfied with Firaxis's version though...
I hope this isn't true. I was very happy with both xcom games. I thought it looked great from the gameplay footage I had seen. If its true I hope that they makes what they had into another game.
When a game goes through as many changes as this one has, it tends to turn out bad. The original game looked interesting. If it hadn't had the XCOM name, there would not have been such a backlash against it and we may have had another decent, and possibly original FPS. This game never should have been part of XCOM, especially with the other game that stays truer to the original. I, for one, am a little tired of the FPS genre, but if the original would have just been its own IP and released when it was supposed to, we may have had an interesting game. Now, I do not think anything good will come of this game.
Well that's interesting. Quite a huge development haul and would be the cause of the long delay.
When I first heard of this game I was very excited. The original premise: 1940's/50's time-frame, 1st person view/combat, taking photos for research and some strategic elements all sounded like a fresh take on one of my favorite gaming properties, even though it strayed far away from the original. Of course, once Firaxis announced their X-com game, which sounds like an updated version of the original, I really lost a lot of interest in this title. And the more they change it the less I like what I hear.
As long as its unique and fun what is the big deal, I personally am very tired of this "call of duty" fps fad that's been and lets be honest right here: holding gaming in general back. Fps is a cornerstone of gaming I'm not trying to deny that, but if this is more like RC that's not a bad thing. Gaming is so much more than just shooting people and using grenades and crazy tech, yes that stuff can make good games but fps' don't all have to be like that.
That's not really a major change. A switch to the third-person instead of first-person? It was always supposed to be squad-based, tactical game. Personally, I'd prefer it stay first-person, or at least switch between the two ala Brothers in Arms, Rainbow Six: Vegas, or Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
The possibility of the game being a $30 download is intriguing though.
I was excited for this game because I really wanted another XCOM. Then Firaxis announced their XCOM game, and this one dropped way off my radar. I just don't see the point in playing an XCOM game that, as far as we know, is nothing like XCOM when their is a true strategy XCOM game on the horizon that looks like the original, only a lot better. I feel like I just typed XCOM way too many times for one small post.
As long as its well executed and fun - there is room for games in every genre. My concern is actually the lower price. Sounds like they may be at release something or vaporware moment and they no longer have real confidence in the entire project. However, it is also entirely possible that they have created a fun game that is worth the whole $30.
just going to buy enemy unknown that looks so much fun then this xcom
This blows, I was looking forward to the FPS aspect, and how you could upgrade your guns with alien tech. Oh well, guess we'll just have to wit and see what happens...
