PopCap Closes Dublin Office, 96 Employees Laid Off

PopCap Games announced the closing of its Dublin-based offices, resulting in 96 employees being let go.

"PopCap has provided outplacement support and many employees have offers in other parts of PopCap, at EA or new opportunities with technology partners in Ireland," the company said in a statement sent to Game Informer.

"Europe remains a critical market for PopCap and we will continue to grow our presence through centralized services operated from our North American offices and through the extensive European EA network. Worldwide, PopCap is still growing, and intends to continue hiring and developing current staff.

"We will continue to invest in new games, platforms, and markets while we expand the reach of hit franchises like Bejeweled and Plants vs. Zombies."

PopCap's North American offices in Seattle, Wash. saw 50 people let go as a result of layoffs. EA announced last week it's creating 300 jobs for its European Customer Experience Center in Galway, Ireland.

  • Please God, let this wave of firing people end.

  • THIS is why I chose to go into Software Engineering instead of Game Development when I went to college. Job security is just horrible with studios getting closed left and right, at little to no notice. Hopefully it won't be long before these guys are employed again.

  • But I thought EA had a lot of money ...
  • Well that is sad to hear, hopefully they can continue to work in the games industry with new jobs.

  • The good thing is that Popcap is helping the laid off employees find jobs elsewhere.  Wish these Dublin employees well.

  • how sad

  • That's always sad news. NOW where's Plant vs Zombies 2?!!??

  • Man, when people lose a hard earned job... I cry. This crap is depressing.

  • That is not fun at all. Lets hope though's people find more jobs.

  • Man, this just always seems to happen when EA buys someone.

  • Wow that sucks. I wish the best to those who were laid off.

  • Popcap stopped releasing quality titles a few years ago and they haven't improved. I think their time is just getting over now.

  • That stinks.
