Obsidian Takes To Kickstarter For Next Project
The independent developer is asking for $1.1 million in funding to make the isometric PC RPG of their dreams.
The now-revealed secret project is a love letter to the late-1990s golden age of PC RPGs. "Project Eternity will take the central hero, memorable companions and the epic exploration of Baldur’s Gate, add in the fun, intense combat and dungeon diving of Icewind Dale, and tie it all together with the emotional writing and mature thematic exploration of Planescape: Torment," reads the description on the project's Kickstarter page.
Project Eternity follows the same format as those old Infinity Engine games, with real-time pausable tactical combat and a large, rich fantasy world to explore. Players create their own heroes and collect companions to accompany them through their adventures, engaging in lengthy choice-riddled dialogues and strategic battles along the way.
Among the staff at Obsidian who would be involved in Project Eternity should it get funded are developers who played lead roles on classic PC RPGs from Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment to Fallout: New Vegas and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II.
Obsidian is currently offering the introductory $25 tier for just $20 as an "early bird special," so sooner is better than later if you're looking to relive your glory days of commanding parties of world-conquering heroes in tense tactical battles.
