Wii U Gamepad Won't Be Sold Separately Until 2013

Don't get too excited about buying a bunch of Wii U gamepads. Nintendo just confirmed that it won't be selling its controllers separately at launch in North America.

What, you wanted more information? It sounds like you probably won't need more that one controller. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime clarified that none of the Wii U launch games will support the use of more than one controller at launch. The Wii U pro controller (the one without the screen) will cost $49.99.

  • I feel like this is a kick in the nuts for anyone who wanted a Wii U. What is a next gen console that doesn't have splitscreen?
  • What you say you're controller is misbehaving... Please come back next year and we'll fix that right up
  • I'm more interested in the pro controllers. I don't intend to use the gamepad very much anyway.
  • That makes sense. There's no point in selling them at launch when you can't even use the extra controllers. It's like if Microsoft sold the Kinect before any games were on it.
  • uhhh. what if they break and u need another one?
  • Well hopefully I don't break it before the new Zelda comes out because its confirmed that it will use the Wii U.
  • "Reggie Fils-Aime clarified that none of the Wii U launch games will support the use of more than one controller at launch." ^More than one Wii U controller, or more than one controller in general? Because the latter either contradicts New Super Mario Bros' gameplay or it's status as a launch title.
  • Well that makes sense, since they announced fairly late that it will be able to support two of the things--not nearly enough time to develop games to utilize it.

  • "At launch in North America". Good idea, considering the yen to USD conversion is roughly $170. And the fact that no launch titles will be able to support two gamepads. Gotta wonder though, at such a high price point for the additional controller, when and who (other than Nintendo) would develop a game to support two gamepads? And how much will those games cost?
  • I'm fine with that... Nothings too bad with just playing with one controller... Now onto more pressing matters, Nintendo just give us the freaking release dates of games PLEASE!!! I really want to know when Pikmin 3 is coming out so I can adjust my funds to account for it, it's rather frustrating being in the dark so much.

  • Well that sucks, I wonder what happened.

  • Fine with me.

  • Hmm, I wonder? If you have to have a pad replaced before then, will it be covered by Nintendo under some kinda warranty thing?
  • I suppose the Pro controller will be primarily for the downloadable library. At least they changed their one gamepad only decision.
  • I think they need all the controllers they can make to sell with the Wii U due to production problems. That's why they are launching later in other countries than USA because they couldn't make enough for both and didn't want to be short for xmas 2012 USA.
  • By 2013 they will have new Wii U+ tablets to sell.

  • Smart decision, idiot consumers would confuse them and buy for the Wii
  • Well it should only be a month and a half after launch and it will be 2013...

  • Thats pretty acceptable. How bout the pro controller for any skeptics

Edit: sorry misread that. Well I really hope the U pad price stays at 70 at the highest otherwise I think ill be playing mainly single player games
