October Cover Revealed: New Super Mario Bros. U

Gaming's most famous face has graced our cover on a few occasions, but it's been 16 years since our cover story has focused on one of his adventures. We recently had the chance to visit Nintendo of America to play New Super Mario Bros. U, but that's not all we did at the studio. In addition to our ten-page Mario cover story (featuring an interview with legendary designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka), we also have an extensive feature that will prepare you for the impending launch of the Wii U.

We'll also have plenty of non-Nintendo news, including features on Halo 4's Prometheans and the first three hours of XCOM: Enemy Unknown. To kick off the holiday review season, you can also read our thoughts on one of the year's biggest releases, Borderlands 2. Can Gearbox's massive sequel live up to the original? Find out in our October issue, which should be hitting print subscribers near September 10th and digital PC/Mac subscribers on September 11th.

The 10" tablet edition will go live later today, so download the free app for iPad and Android now. To subscribe to Game Informer Digital or convert your current print subscription through us head here. Getting your GI Digital Subscription through us gives you access to the 10" Android, iPad, and PC/Mac editions of the magazine. Otherwise, you can purchase individual issues or subscriptions through the appropriate apps.

Watch and feel free to share the trailer for our month of Nintendo coverage below.

  • Oh man I can't wait for the new Super Mario game, I'm thinking we will probably jump around in a 2D enviroment while going down some pipes!
  • Awesome! While I'm not super excited for NSMBU, maybe this cover story can change my opinion. And if not, I still can't wait to read the rest of the Wii U coverage.
  • You can never go wrong with Mario on the cover. I can't wait to read about Borderlands 2 because I've been playing the dlc from 1 again.

  • I just knew it would be a Wii U game. This time last year was the Wii swansong (Skyward Sword) on the cover, so it's only fitting.
  • This is one of my favorite covers, very colorful and vibrant. Don't really care for the game, but I love the cover!
  • If every page of the Mario story does not just say "Mario ass Mario game." I will be so mad.
  • Amazing looking cover, too bad I can't say the same for the game. There's been way too many New Super Mario Bros games lately.
  • D'awh, dancing Koopa.

  • The cover is beautiful!

This might be the most cheerful cover we've ever had. The X-COM article is great too.
  • Cool cover and all but I doubt this will be that much different then any other new super Mario game I mean they're great but it's the same thing every time!!! Wish you guys would've picked a different Wii U game to put on the cover
  • YEA!

  • DOUBLE YEA!
  • What a great surprise. I kind of thought GI had given up on Nintendo coverage because Andy made that Tweet a while ago about how Nintendo make themselves almost impossible to report on. Again, a great surprise.
  • Glad to see Nintendo on the cover, even if I'm fairly blaise regarding the game itself. Can't wait to see the borderlands review and other Wii u coverage though.

  • That is an awesome cover... Also I love that drunk Yoshi is on the cover!
