The lights are on
The cable network, which was originally designed as a 24-hour video game station, has been moving away from its original format for some time. Now, reports have surfaced that G4 may receive a suave makeover -- with a name change for the network possible.
The entertainment industry bible Variety is reporting that NBCUniversal, which owns G4, is planning to rebrand the network, focusing on a more upscale, stylish format aimed at the "modern male." Variety says the format could be similar to the men's fashion and culture magazine GQ.
Since its inception, G4 has struggled to find an audience, though a few shows like its long-running video game/pop culture program Attack of the Show! and American Ninja Warrior have been successful. Recently, popular X-Play host Adam Sessler (and the G4 personality with the strongest ties to the game industry) parted ways with the network. It's not known if that parting has anything to do with the network's rebranding.
The network appointed a new general manager early in 2012, former NBC marketing executive Adam Stotsky.
While video games would likely remain a part of this new, lifestyle oriented approach, it appears that the network that was to be devoted to video games is moving farther away from its roots.

I'm okay with this. I wasn't able to get G4 until fairly recently. I wasn't around for what you guys are calling the glory days of G4 but the gaming shows I saw were unwatchable. The "humor" was so dreadfully awkward. They seemed to treat it like gamers were screaming E! or TRL (is that crap still around?) ditzes. There are internet shows based on gaming that are so much better. No real loss here.
X-Play is really the only thing worth watching, and even that is a shadow of it's former self. I remember when they used to do pretty funny skits with Morgan and Adam, but now it's just "blah". It's all reruns of cops and cheaters mostly now. Ninja Warrior is still fun to watch tho
"Modern male?" No thanks. I have no desire to watch a bunch of pretentious hipsters tell me why I must buy the latest smartphone.
G4 has gone downhill since the mid 2000's anyways. They've lost touch with their roots on how to impact their audience. Instead they try to grab a new audience with these primitives show such as "Cops" and "Cheaters."
What a sad end. I haven't been able to watch G4 since my cable company decided to make it a "Premium Channel". I used to be one of the few networks that I would constantly watch, but all I kept hearing since then was how much it going down the drain. Perhaps a reformat is needed with more original programming, and hopefully still keep an emphasis on our gaming culture
Perhaps they will stop making me feel shame for enjoying video games.. I feel likeGameStop PROMO I am at work and the GameStop PROMO video is playing over and over(. And Over.) when I watch G4. Maybe I am not the 'demo' anymore.
I think this always happens though. Cartoon network plays non cartoon things occasionally and Music Television does NOT play music.. Changing their format to fit young people who like music. As if MUSIC were a lifestyle. Everybody likes music, not just douchers.. Sorry, this is why I don't watch TV anymore. It's disappointing.
G4 use to be so awesome I loved coming home from school and watching G4. But when they got rid of shows like Judgement Day, G4tv.com, Arena and added stupid crap like cheaters, cops, ninja warriors thats when it started to go down. Its just another Mtv the only thing good about G4 now is when they do coverage of E3. And they wonder why Direct tv didn't want to renew their contract because they suck and no one watches G4 no more.
A man station? Could be good, but I do like G4. Sad day.
Even though they've already been making it less of a video game channel in the first place, it was inevitable that they were going to eventually steer away from video games more and more. The internet has now become the primary source for gaming news, and usually with less ads than on TV. Why watch a TV show that is on at a specific time with 10+ minutes worth of ads when you can watch a video on the same thing whenever you want and with little to no ads? It's just simply more convenient.
Does anyone remember Cinematech or the actual show Cheats. This is when G4 was actually fun to watch.
This is way I stopped watching G4 in the first place! All the good videogame shows were canceld and replaced with re-runs of Cops and Cheaters. Even X-play lost me, and that was my favorite show for the longest time. G4, you have lost your way, and my respect!
this sucks for me since i just got the channel a couple months ago
I miss g4tv so much i started watching it when it fisrt aired but stopped watching after we no longer had the channel. But i still always follow them on there site still but im starting to get bored from the lack of orignallity on aots and xplay i miss the good old days when xplay was was crazy and more comedy then news and when aots was still awesome but i fear those days are now over :(
G4 has been lower than festering rat excrement for years now.
Ever since G4 split with Tech TV, it's just gone down the tubes. I expected this to happen.
