The lights are on
Update: Nintendo released some new statistics showing huge increases in 3DS sales since the launch of its new, larger XL hardware. According to Nintendo, 3DS hardware sales (we assume this means both original and XL hardware) increased 36 percent over July. 3DS software, thanks to the success of New Super Mario Bros. 2, did even better, increasing over 68 percent over the previous month.
Nintendo also revealed specific sales figures for the two big 3DS titles of the month. New Super Mario Bros. 2 moved 240,000 units, making it the highest selling individual SKU of the month. Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance sold 180,000 copies.
U.S. market research firm NPD released its latest video game retail sales figures for the month of August. THQ's Darksiders II led software sales with 247,000 units sold. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron from Activision placed 7th and sold 105,000 units.
Overall game sales declined 20 percent year-over-year from $647.2MM to $515.6MM, according to NPD.
Below is the top 10 list of best-selling video games in the U.S. for August 2012:
**(includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)
NPD's reporting period is from July 29 through August 25, which is why Madden NFL 13 (August 28) is noticeably absent from this list.
check out arkham city still sittin pretty
Interesting how Black Ops is selling more than MW3. I'm thinking Treyarch might be starting to come out on top. BO2 will probably put them up there, if I had to guess.
Good for THQ. I know they had alot riding on this game.
I hope the sales keep coming so that THQ can fully recover and possibly give us a Darksiders 3 and Saints Row:The Fourth.
Backlog is huge, so I can wait for a price drop to get Darksiders II. Plus, looking at a DSiXL, and that damn Wii U is coming out. I should have gone into a real field - job wise, that is, not a real field. Although fields are nice. All naturey and stuff.
Arkham is still in the top 10?
That's right! I preordered Darksiders, glad a middle-tier game is selling big time.
I'm glad Darksiders is getting recognition. A game this good deserves it!
I buy a new copy of Black Ops every month. That aside, I always like to see a THQ game sell.
Darksiders 2 was a pretty big disappointment, even though it is a good game. They strayed too far from the original formula, it is a very different game, one that I really didn't want. I loved the "Mature Zelda" thing they were going for in the original. The pacing was immaculate, the dungeons were all completely different and fresh. The variety was incredible. The story was great.
In the new one, it is more like Kingdoms of Amalur. The pacing is way off in this one. There are a quarter of the boss fights compared to the first. You no longer unlock awesome new gadgets after every dungeon. The dungeons all look and feel the same as well. The variety is nearly nonexistent. The variety took a big hit as well, as did the story. I mean, it is a good game and well made, but it isn't Darksiders 2. It is a completely different game with the Darksiders name on it, which is a damn, damn shame.
So many people complained about the last one being like Zelda and a mix of other great games, but what these people failed to realize is that it didn't matter, because the game was fantastic. However, these morons must have gotten to Vigil, who took the complaints to heart and completely changed the game. It doesn't even have the awesome atmosphere of the first. It just feels generic through and through. I really, really hope that if they get to make a third one they will go back to the formula of the first one.
Make it smaller, we don't need these huge hub worlds that have nothing of interest in them. Make the game about the dungeons, and make the dungeon variety as great as it was in the first one. Focus on the cool gadgets again, as well as the great boss fights. There is only one great boss fight in the sequel, and it is the first one. After that, it is all downhill. Make the third one a true sequel to the first, not a sequel to the second.
As for the rest of the games on this list that I've actually played...
New Super Mario Bros 2 was boring, same exact game was the one that came before it. Might sound hypocritical considering my rant about Darksiders 2 being too different from the first, but developers need to strike that perfect balance of new and familiar. Darksiders 2 failed by making it too different, and NSMB2 failed by making it too similar.
Sleeping Dogs was good fun, although all of the side missions were garbage. If you are in it for the story, you'll get a great 8 or so hours out of it. The missions are fun and the story is well told and well acted, just don't go into it expecting an open world game, because they only things to do in the open world are boring races and repetitive cop missions that are all exactly the same.
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron was great fun. A huge improvement over the first. The variety is pretty astounding actually. Every single missions you play as someone else, who has their own unique gimmick. You never spend too much time doing one thing, and when that one thing risks overstaying its welcome, they throw something new at you. It's a great game.
The Amazing Spider Man was decent. Most of the game takes place indoors, and the missions are all generic. The story is a waste of time as well. It is good fun if you just want to swing around the city, but don't expect any great gameplay in the actual missions. It is all pretty generic.
Is it really any great surprise? Seeing as CoD isn't until Novemeber- I think it's safe to say D2 is gonna do pretty good until then... ;-)
For 10 days of sales, and for that game, that seems pretty good.
It's certainly going to be interesting to see next months figures in regard to DS2, it will tell the rest of the story.
The first game shipped 1.2 in first 4 weeks worldwide, I'm betting (and hoping) that DS2 will do better.
I'm having a lot of fun with Darksiders 2!
Wow Batman AC is still selling strong. Maybe the wii u version will get some late adopters.
As much as I want to play Darksiders 2 now i am restraining myself for two reasons. One is that i havent beaten the first one. I recently started it and im having a lot of fun with it and im planning on beating that one first. Second, i would like to be able to play it on the wii u and seeing that i have more games i still need to play (like transformers) i will try to wait.
Its good that nintendos 3ds sales are starting to pick up now that some games are being released for it.
I'm happy that Darksiders 2 is up on top. It's an amazing title.
I'm also stoked that Batman: AC is up there as well.
I'm guessing that Black Ops is up there because of the sequel coming out in a few months. That or people have finally realized that Treyarch is better (It's all about the Zombies).
