Dark Souls Creator Ponders Easy Mode

Update: Since yesterday's interview with Metro went live, Namco-Bandai contacted them to say Miyazaki's comment about possibly adding an 'Easy Mode' was a mistranslation.

According to the website:

But after that comment circled around the Internet Namco Bandai got in contact with us, claiming that there was a ‘translation mistake’. Although we did note at the time that the interview’s translation wasn’t very good the sentence in question always seemed pretty unambiguous. But this is apparently what it should have been:

‘This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about how to make everyone complete the game while maintaining the current difficulty and carefully send all gamers the messages behind it.’

According to Namco Bandai, ‘This revision has been made in order to inform Miyazaki-san's true intention and what has been originally posted had a mistake because of mistranslation.’

Original Story: Dark Souls is a difficult game. So difficult, in fact, that it's turning some players away. This has caused series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki to think about possibly adding an easy mode.

"I personally want my games to be described as satisfying rather than difficult," Miyazaki said in an interview with Metro. "As a matter of fact, I am aiming at giving players sense of accomplishment in the use of difficulty.

"Having said that, however, it is true that Dark Souls is rather difficult and a number of people may hesitate to play. This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about whether I should prepare another difficulty that everyone can complete or carefully send all gamers the messages behind our difficult games."

Miyazaki later said if the number of easy games is increasing, he thinks it's because difficulty is "not related to interesting and worthwhile game elements in many games among players."

Capcom released a new update for Dragon's Dogma that added an easy mode earlier this year.

Comments
  • That's right. Leave it difficult.

  • You BETTER NOT make it easier. It's fine the way it is.
  • havent played this one yet even though i have it

  • WoW montser fight war great dark souls

  • Good Interesting

  • Who gives a shite about a mistranslation, just go ahead and put in an easy mode to sell more.

  • Well I think that its a good thing because more people that threw down the controller the first time they played will come back and experience one of the best games of 2011 and 2012.

  • Come on people, buck up or get out of the industry. If a game is too hard; get better at it! No one ever got better by quitting.

  • I would be willing to play a normal mode for kicks. Just as long as they keep the same challenging normal difficulty. It wouldn't be the same experience otherwise.

  • Wouldn't making multiplayer only accessible for those who chose normal mode be better? On a entirely new save. You can do story mode on easy mode, and if you want multiplayer, get on normal mode [save] and use what you learned from easy mode.

  • Make an Easy Mode, but make it really unenjoyable.

Leave the fun/challenge on anything on Normal or Higher.

  • Difficulty is what made this game great. A learning process that never ends. Making this game easy will be it's downfall

  • I played this game.and to be honest yes it did turn me away. The fact that after you die not only you but  evrything u killed and or destroyed is brought back to life  like nothing ever happened and literally start from scratch  is a huge turn off. I mean come on give me some credit for the work i just put it in. from getting from point a to point b while killing skeleton a.i's and what not. I appreciate a challenging game but this isnt challening it's plain fustrating and annoying. If im paying for a game i expect to have fun not be pissed off.

  • Yes. It was way to friggen hard ._.
