The lights are on
Update: Since yesterday's interview with Metro went live, Namco-Bandai contacted them to say Miyazaki's comment about possibly adding an 'Easy Mode' was a mistranslation.
According to the website:
But after that comment circled around the Internet Namco Bandai got in contact with us, claiming that there was a ‘translation mistake’. Although we did note at the time that the interview’s translation wasn’t very good the sentence in question always seemed pretty unambiguous. But this is apparently what it should have been:‘This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about how to make everyone complete the game while maintaining the current difficulty and carefully send all gamers the messages behind it.’
According to Namco Bandai, ‘This revision has been made in order to inform Miyazaki-san's true intention and what has been originally posted had a mistake because of mistranslation.’

Original Story: Dark Souls is a difficult game. So difficult, in fact, that it's turning some players away. This has caused series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki to think about possibly adding an easy mode.
"I personally want my games to be described as satisfying rather than difficult," Miyazaki said in an interview with Metro. "As a matter of fact, I am aiming at giving players sense of accomplishment in the use of difficulty."Having said that, however, it is true that Dark Souls is rather difficult and a number of people may hesitate to play. This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about whether I should prepare another difficulty that everyone can complete or carefully send all gamers the messages behind our difficult games."
Miyazaki later said if the number of easy games is increasing, he thinks it's because difficulty is "not related to interesting and worthwhile game elements in many games among players."
Capcom released a new update for Dragon's Dogma that added an easy mode earlier this year.

The game really isn't that difficult people. Some of the boss fights will take you a few tries, and certain areas will need to be learned before you can pass them. Don't bring 3,000,000 souls into a boss fight, and don't bring them into new areas. Old NES games where you had 3 lives and then it was game over, those were hard. UO pre-Trammel, that was hard. That being said, if the devs want to slide down the level of skill required to finish their games, it wouldn't hurt my feelings. I don't play games on easy, but I have nothing against people that do.
The game's reputation as 'super difficult' is overblown. Its a fair challenge.
Most of the people who are turned off from the game because of difficulty are likely swayed by word of mouth, and haven't actually tried the game out.
High difficulty is great when it is fair and a game does not have technical issues. Unfortunately, most developers are lazy. For them, high difficulty means stronger enemies/lower health instead of smarter AI.
I understand his feelings on this, but he's taking a big risk of alienating his fan-base by adding an easy mode. Even if there's a "regular" mode that's just like before, some people will still resent the easy mode just for being there.
I don't get why it's so hard for people to be reasonable about this. If you don't like, don't play on easy mode. As far as multiplayer goes, just make it so that people playing on easy can only invade or play with others also on easy mode. Dark Souls is one of my favorite games of all time, and i support the idea of opening it up to more people. Even without difficulty the combat is great and the lore immersive. Heck, i might even play it through on easy once just to completely immerse myself in the story and world. In my mind, if an easy mode were done right, this could only be a plus to the game, and others are too obsessed with the idea of Dark Souls only being for hardcore gamers.
I own demon souls and well personally I think this is a good and bad thing. The one thing dark soul and demon souls has kept up is the difficulty. I have not played dark souls, so I will only talk about demon souls. Demon souls was fun although I found myself grinding to get simple things. Not only that but in a game as difficult as it is grinding is boring. Giving the game a easier mode would be nice. It would bring in new buyers that didn't buy it due to the difficulty.
Bad idea in my opinion, unless you're looking to maximize profits. Everyone I know who has played the game agrees that it's the reward of succeeding despite the extreme difficulty that makes the gameplay work.
How would that effect PvP? Those playing on Easy would get destroyed by invaders. PvP is a significant ramp up in difficulty from PvE as it is (well, usually).
Anyway, if it means more people will give this outstanding game a shot, I say go for it.
I would not add an easy mode to this game. Part of the appeal of the Souls games is the challenge. Adding an easy mode would take away from the true experience.
How would you make this game easier? lower health from enemies? Well with backstab and parry it's pretty simple. Higher health for players? well that ruins online. Seriously how would you make this game easier? I mean the difficuly only comes in if your not observant, can't really change that can you.
I think everyone should be entitled to enjoy a particular game. I think there should two game modes for Dark Souls. One should be normal and the other casual. Normal would be the way it was meant to be, very difficult.
