Dark Souls Creator Ponders Easy Mode

Update: Since yesterday's interview with Metro went live, Namco-Bandai contacted them to say Miyazaki's comment about possibly adding an 'Easy Mode' was a mistranslation.

According to the website:

But after that comment circled around the Internet Namco Bandai got in contact with us, claiming that there was a ‘translation mistake’. Although we did note at the time that the interview’s translation wasn’t very good the sentence in question always seemed pretty unambiguous. But this is apparently what it should have been:

‘This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about how to make everyone complete the game while maintaining the current difficulty and carefully send all gamers the messages behind it.’

According to Namco Bandai, ‘This revision has been made in order to inform Miyazaki-san's true intention and what has been originally posted had a mistake because of mistranslation.’

Original Story: Dark Souls is a difficult game. So difficult, in fact, that it's turning some players away. This has caused series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki to think about possibly adding an easy mode.

"I personally want my games to be described as satisfying rather than difficult," Miyazaki said in an interview with Metro. "As a matter of fact, I am aiming at giving players sense of accomplishment in the use of difficulty.

"Having said that, however, it is true that Dark Souls is rather difficult and a number of people may hesitate to play. This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about whether I should prepare another difficulty that everyone can complete or carefully send all gamers the messages behind our difficult games."

Miyazaki later said if the number of easy games is increasing, he thinks it's because difficulty is "not related to interesting and worthwhile game elements in many games among players."

Capcom released a new update for Dragon's Dogma that added an easy mode earlier this year.

  • The game really isn't that difficult people. Some of the boss fights will take you a few tries, and certain areas will need to be learned before you can pass them. Don't bring 3,000,000 souls into a boss fight, and don't bring them into new areas. Old NES games where you had 3 lives and then it was game over, those were hard. UO pre-Trammel, that was hard. That being said, if the devs want to slide down the level of skill required to finish their games, it wouldn't hurt my feelings. I don't play games on easy, but I have nothing against people that do.

  • Why does this upset so many people? No one is forcing you to play on the easier mode, should it release.
  • The game's reputation as 'super difficult' is overblown. Its a fair challenge.

Most of the people who are turned off from the game because of difficulty are likely swayed by word of mouth, and haven't actually tried the game out.

  • High difficulty is great when it is fair and a game does not have technical issues. Unfortunately, most developers are lazy. For them, high difficulty means stronger enemies/lower health instead of smarter AI.

  • I loved Dark Souls, but anyone who says the game isn't absolutely F***ing hard is out of their mind. I couldnt beat the game in the end, despite really liking it. I would love to have an easy mode.
  • I understand his feelings on this, but he's taking a big risk of alienating his fan-base by adding an easy mode. Even if there's a "regular" mode that's just like before, some people will still resent the easy mode just for being there.

  • I don't get why it's so hard for people to be reasonable about this. If you don't like, don't play on easy mode. As far as multiplayer goes, just make it so that people playing on easy can only invade or play with others also on easy mode. Dark Souls is one of my favorite games of all time, and i support the idea of opening it up to more people. Even without difficulty the combat is great and the lore immersive. Heck, i might even play it through on easy once just to completely immerse myself in the story and world. In my mind, if an easy mode were done right, this could only be a plus to the game, and others are too obsessed with the idea of Dark Souls only being for hardcore gamers.

  • I own demon souls and well personally I think this is a good and bad thing. The one thing dark soul and demon souls has kept up is the difficulty. I have not played dark souls, so I will only talk about demon souls. Demon souls was fun although I found myself grinding to get simple things. Not only that but in a game as difficult as it is grinding is boring. Giving the game a easier mode would be nice. It would bring in new buyers that didn't buy it due to the difficulty.

  • I'm really surprised at all the comments on here (well, maybe not). We as gamers complain in the same breath about a lack of interesting games on the market as well as lack of sales for our favorite franchises. An easy mode for one of the most difficult games of this generation would NOT affect the normal mode enjoyment of hardcore gamers, but would DEFINITELY increase the sales of a title that has a universal stigma of being EXTREMELY difficult. I have gamed for over 35 years. I own 2 PS3's, 2 360's a Wii and a gaming PC but have shied away from this game due to my temper with notoriously difficult titles. What harm would it be to open up what is accalaimed as an excellent title, to the masses? I see only a win/win situation for the developer and sour grapes for the so-called "elite" gaming community. PLEASE offer an easy mode as many AVID gamers would be interesred in checking out this title.
  • Bad idea in my opinion, unless you're looking to maximize profits.  Everyone I know who has played the game agrees that it's the reward of succeeding despite the extreme difficulty that makes the gameplay work.

  • I don't think it should it have easy mode. Once you have played the game for a bit and invested some time, the game really isn't that difficult. I would prefer if the difficulty scaling doubled every time you beat it, and there were only say 3 or 4 times that you could beat. The difference from ng+3 to ng+4 is pretty minuscule and it would be more rewarding to know the set amount of times you can beat the game before it stops getting harder. All in all a great game, but definitely does not need an "easy mode" I would hate to see that in the next souls game. Also I found Dark Souls to be significantly easier than Demon Souls, but perhaps that is because I became familiar with the control and mechanics of the game by playing Demon Souls first.
  • How would that effect PvP? Those playing on Easy would get destroyed by invaders. PvP is a significant ramp up in difficulty from PvE as it is (well, usually).

Anyway, if it means more people will give this outstanding game a shot, I say go for it.

  • I say no to the easy mode. Not because it would ruin my experience of playing the story mode of the game, I'll keep on playing the hardest difficulty. The main problem with this whole easy mode thing is that it would completely ruin the multiplayer in this game. Think about it. You have PLAYER A who is on easy mode in the game while PLAYER B who is playing on hard mode. PLAYER A basically zooms through the game and gets all the good armor and weapons with no trouble while PLAYER B is no doubt going to have trouble getting such items and will pass some of the good stuff up after some time and won't be as far as PLAYER A. Now lets say both PLAYER A and PLAYER B are at the same level, have the same stats, and the same level of experience with the game. PLAYER A invades PLAYER B. Now tell me who is going to win? Obviously PLAYER A since he has the better items. This is what I mean by how it would ruin the PvP experienced in the game when a new player will just rush through the game and get the good items, and, more then likely, remain at a low level. It's as bad as doing the Bottomless Box Glich in game. I'd only would fully accept an easy mode into the SOULS series on a few conditions: 1. Characters that are made and are playing on easy mode, can not be used for the multiplayer/PvP aspect of the game until a certain level (or not at all). Or that characters created on easy mode get less souls from enemies in game so they can't just quickly level up. 2. Achievements can only be gained on the hardest difficulty. I'm not trying to elitest or sulfish but come on, I worked hard on my achievements/trophies for the game so why should someone put less work in and get the credit. Those are the two things that I would want also implimented into the easy mode of the game before I'd accept such an addition to the game. No I'm not an elitest (I'm actually a casual type of gamer), but I enjoy the SOULS series difficulty and I'm actually kind of unhappy that an easy mode is being even considered to what I feel to be a perfect game.

  • i loved Dark Souls for the little I played before I raged quit. I really wanted to play more of the game but i just could get pass some parts. So I am happy they might add a easy mode.

  • "ohhh you silly americans...too hard for you? Here, have easy mode! enemies won't move now, you happy?" "in future we'll add NPC with the word "follow" on top of head and give the player a gun"

This game's difficulty is extremely exaggerated. Didn't get it the first time? Do it again, until you get it right. All the enemies will be in the exact same place. If you keep getting killed, then it's your own fault 'cause you don't seem to learn. No wonder they never released Super Mario: the lost levels. We americans sooo dumb
  • I would not add an easy mode to this game. Part of the appeal of the Souls games is the challenge. Adding an easy mode would take away from the true experience.

  • How would you make this game easier? lower health from enemies? Well with backstab and parry it's pretty simple. Higher health for players? well that ruins online. Seriously how would you make this game easier? I mean the difficuly only comes in if your not observant, can't really change that can you.

  • I think everyone should be entitled to enjoy a particular game. I think there should two game modes for Dark Souls. One should be normal and the other casual. Normal would be the way it was meant to be, very difficult.
