The lights are on
Update: Since yesterday's interview with Metro went live, Namco-Bandai contacted them to say Miyazaki's comment about possibly adding an 'Easy Mode' was a mistranslation.
According to the website:
But after that comment circled around the Internet Namco Bandai got in contact with us, claiming that there was a ‘translation mistake’. Although we did note at the time that the interview’s translation wasn’t very good the sentence in question always seemed pretty unambiguous. But this is apparently what it should have been:‘This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about how to make everyone complete the game while maintaining the current difficulty and carefully send all gamers the messages behind it.’
According to Namco Bandai, ‘This revision has been made in order to inform Miyazaki-san's true intention and what has been originally posted had a mistake because of mistranslation.’

Original Story: Dark Souls is a difficult game. So difficult, in fact, that it's turning some players away. This has caused series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki to think about possibly adding an easy mode.
"I personally want my games to be described as satisfying rather than difficult," Miyazaki said in an interview with Metro. "As a matter of fact, I am aiming at giving players sense of accomplishment in the use of difficulty."Having said that, however, it is true that Dark Souls is rather difficult and a number of people may hesitate to play. This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about whether I should prepare another difficulty that everyone can complete or carefully send all gamers the messages behind our difficult games."
Miyazaki later said if the number of easy games is increasing, he thinks it's because difficulty is "not related to interesting and worthwhile game elements in many games among players."
Capcom released a new update for Dragon's Dogma that added an easy mode earlier this year.

It's a great game, if adding an easy mode got more people to play I don't see a problem with it. But under my breath I'd be saying 'p*ssy' lol
I think this is a good move. I really liked Demon's Souls, but I never finished it and didn't even bother picking up Dark Souls because the difficulty seemed so ridiculous at times. I can appreciate a challenge in games, but once I'm in possession of all the skills I need and the ability to put them to use, it shouldn't take twenty repetitions, a rage quit, and ten more tries to get through just a segment of a level.
I think they'd be wrong to dumb down the difficulty overall, but a difficulty even a little less demanding would make the game more interesting to players like me that don't really have enough time to spend it all ticked off at a game.
See, this is a fine example on how if many people complain enough, that companies can change there games from being awesome, to sucky. First ME3 ending get's changed and now Dark souls is going to have an easier mode for the cry baby gamers.
NONONONONO! THIS WOULD RUIN IT!
If they make it like a 'kids' mode, where the player is continuesly ridiculed[albeit subtley] and they are locked out of the best of moments, then, then I say okay.
Otherwise, the Souls series is the best! And there's nobody else doing what they do anymore, which is giving a legit challenge! Don't go taking the last bon fire of light away Miyazaki, in this Mcdonalds industry! Praise the Sun!
People just need to know that you can summon other players to help you trough an area and beat up a boss with overwhelming force!!! No need for Easy mode.
while i totally agree with all of the hardcore fans about the difficulty, i understand his decision... majority of people tend to not play games if you're going to die every 5 minutes or less....if you're dying all of the time, that takes the fun out of it and not worth buying (remember, he's thinking of sales, not his fans because even if there's a lowere difficulty, the hardcore fans will still play it...don't believe me, ask all of the devil may cry 4 fans when they cried foul over nero)...and last but not least, he didn't say he's taking out the difficulty, just only adding an easy mode...
They have to make their money some way. If they are losing sales because of the difficulty than go for it. As long as it doesn't interfere with the gameplay in normal mode I'm all for it.
Still haven't gotten my hands on a copy of Dark Souls yet. I definitely won't be switching on easy mode when I do. The challenge is what makes it more interesting and exciting. I can see why he would be considering it though. Everyone's brains work differently, and a game shouldn't be exclusive to people who can play it. It should open up to people who want to play it. Progressively moving from easy to more difficult modes is something I already do when I go from normal to hard, or hard to insane.
Keep the challenge. Dark Souls is like a right of passage for hardcore gamers.
Thatsthats a horrible idea. Thats what makes these games soo appealing.
If you need this mode you suck and playing a game that's main goal is to be hard you should be shamed
