The lights are on
Update: Since yesterday's interview with Metro went live, Namco-Bandai contacted them to say Miyazaki's comment about possibly adding an 'Easy Mode' was a mistranslation.
According to the website:
But after that comment circled around the Internet Namco Bandai got in contact with us, claiming that there was a ‘translation mistake’. Although we did note at the time that the interview’s translation wasn’t very good the sentence in question always seemed pretty unambiguous. But this is apparently what it should have been:‘This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about how to make everyone complete the game while maintaining the current difficulty and carefully send all gamers the messages behind it.’
According to Namco Bandai, ‘This revision has been made in order to inform Miyazaki-san's true intention and what has been originally posted had a mistake because of mistranslation.’
Original Story: Dark Souls is a difficult game. So difficult, in fact, that it's turning some players away. This has caused series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki to think about possibly adding an easy mode.
"I personally want my games to be described as satisfying rather than difficult," Miyazaki said in an interview with Metro. "As a matter of fact, I am aiming at giving players sense of accomplishment in the use of difficulty."Having said that, however, it is true that Dark Souls is rather difficult and a number of people may hesitate to play. This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about whether I should prepare another difficulty that everyone can complete or carefully send all gamers the messages behind our difficult games."
Miyazaki later said if the number of easy games is increasing, he thinks it's because difficulty is "not related to interesting and worthwhile game elements in many games among players."
Capcom released a new update for Dragon's Dogma that added an easy mode earlier this year.
for the love of god do it! than I'll actually buy it, play through easy mode, and want more and have the option of a greater difficulty...
course easy for this should be normal for everything else...
Jesus Christ no. This would ruin the whole point of dark souls for me, the immense satisfaction after you finally beat a ridiculously hard boss that has killed you time and time again, and then the feeling of terror when you realize that you could still lose the ginormous amount of souls that you just got from it trying to get to the bonfire. There are many other great things about this game, but its unique brand of difficulty, making you memorize the location and strategy of all the monsters in each areas to get to the boss with enough potions, is the best part for me. Granted, adding an easy mode would not mean that i would have to play it, but i think it would tempt some people and ruin a large portion of what this game is ultimately about.
An easy mode would convince me to buy the game. I don't have the time I used to anymore. I'm not going to spend my time on a game where I constantly have to die and repeat.
Dark Souls is the most rewarding game I know BECAUSE of the difficulty. If they lower it, I don't think it would be such a great game to some people. But that's just me. If you are one of those people who hasn't played this game because of the difficulty then this would be great for you because it is a fantastic game! Just be prepared to buy an extra controller for rage quitting ;)
I am more turned of by the cost of games but the difficulty of this one is not exactly pulling me in. not when I could put that same money toward Halo 4 and fell like a total bad butt.
With how the multiplayer works in these games, I find it difficult to image how an easy mode could be incorporated into the game without either giving exploiters an unfair edge over other players, or just lowering the difficulty for everyone and thereby alienating hardcore fans of the Soul (?) franchise, who're quite satisfied with how challenging these games are.
While I am one of those who are scared away by the fearsome reputation these games command, but at the same time, I respect the developers for not making yet another casual action game franchise for the masses.
noobs gonna noob...
This seems to go against the whole point of dark souls.
I like the difficulty where it is right now, but having different difficulties might not be such a bad thing to bring in new players and of course a larger revenue. Something that concerns me is how will invading work? Will the souls acquired changed based on difficulty? Will there be a definitive difference between beating the game on normal and easy?
The game could potentially become unbalanced in some aspects, but I like the Souls games and I will definitely buy the next installment anyway. I just hope I don't play the next game and then look back at Demon's Souls and sigh.
While an easy mode would take some of the thrill and satisfaction that defeating an especially difficult adversary or completing a troublesome section of the game can bring, there is much more to Dark Souls than just difficulty. The world is immense and incredibly interwoven. There is so much lore that you need to root out on your own, unlike other games that hit you over the head with story. The gameplay is pitch perfect and would probably still be fairly hard if the enemies did less damage because the nature of the gameplay is choosing the right moment to strike. Lastly there is the engrossing RPG part of the game that is what makes it a hordcore game and not the difficulty. Besides, if it's optional, it has no effect on how I play the game or how much I enjoy it.
Oh come on, it wasn't THAT hard.
