Dark Souls Creator Ponders Easy Mode

Update: Since yesterday's interview with Metro went live, Namco-Bandai contacted them to say Miyazaki's comment about possibly adding an 'Easy Mode' was a mistranslation.

According to the website:

But after that comment circled around the Internet Namco Bandai got in contact with us, claiming that there was a ‘translation mistake’. Although we did note at the time that the interview’s translation wasn’t very good the sentence in question always seemed pretty unambiguous. But this is apparently what it should have been:

‘This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about how to make everyone complete the game while maintaining the current difficulty and carefully send all gamers the messages behind it.’

According to Namco Bandai, ‘This revision has been made in order to inform Miyazaki-san's true intention and what has been originally posted had a mistake because of mistranslation.’

Original Story: Dark Souls is a difficult game. So difficult, in fact, that it's turning some players away. This has caused series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki to think about possibly adding an easy mode.

"I personally want my games to be described as satisfying rather than difficult," Miyazaki said in an interview with Metro. "As a matter of fact, I am aiming at giving players sense of accomplishment in the use of difficulty.

"Having said that, however, it is true that Dark Souls is rather difficult and a number of people may hesitate to play. This fact is really sad to me and I am thinking about whether I should prepare another difficulty that everyone can complete or carefully send all gamers the messages behind our difficult games."

Miyazaki later said if the number of easy games is increasing, he thinks it's because difficulty is "not related to interesting and worthwhile game elements in many games among players."

Capcom released a new update for Dragon's Dogma that added an easy mode earlier this year.

  • I don't mind as long as the next Souls game has an equally challenging normal difficulty.
  • isn't the challenge part of what makes Dark Souls so enthralling?
  • No! Dark Souls was awesome because it was so difficult! Just make the spikes easier (like from Sen's Fortress to Giant Black Knight-land).
  • In response to accessibility or to hold a gamers hand while you play? Really now, Dark Souls is for hardcore gamers, its suppose to be difficult. Different games for different people. After all, isn't there an edition called "Prepare to die?" I think people will get the point :)
  • I suppose if they add an option to the game, and any future games in the series, there's really no issues.

That said, the difficulty of the series is one of the major reasons people love it, since it's very different from what other companies are doing.

As such, while I wouldn't mind, and would in fact appreaciate, an "Easy Mode" they should always make sure that's an extra, because if it becomes the norm for the series most of the fans will complain.

  • NO to Easy Mode. It would ruin the principal of the Dark Souls style of play. If you want an easy mode, play something else. This game is not for everyone, and trying to make it more accessible cheapens the experience for those of us to fought to complete the game and earn all the game has to offer. I'm really shocked to hear Miyazaki say this...
  • I beat Demon's with no problem really. Dark for some reason gave me a ton of trouble such that I barely got beyond the 1st main boss. I got poisoned by some rats and said "*** it"
  • Maybe if he spent more time working on super difficult, complex and time crunching things like, you know, screen resolution, I'd already be playing it.
  • Dark Souls is not a hard game. Truly, it isn't. There are people love to exaggerate when they can't handle something, and Dark Souls' supposed difficulty is just another case of this happening. It poses a sensible challenge that requires observation, quick learning, and capable reflexes.
  • this would destroy the game.
  • Anyone who goes into Dark Souls not expecting a challenge should learn to do research.  I see so many complaints about games not being what is expected.  USE THE INTERNET.  I'm rarely disappointed by games because I take the time to research them.

  • Well if its optional then I don't have a problem with it. Obviously the game is at its best when overcoming a well designed challenge, but the world design, architecture, story, combat mechanics and online integration are all amazing features other people might enjoy but might be unable to because the game is too difficult. It would be like a reverse Hardcore Mode, totally optional and just shakes things up for people who don't like it as is. Personally though, it is best played as is and I wouldn't even touch easy, just out of principal.
  • Damn Casuals! Dark Souls does not need this!
  • Doesn't that defeat the purpose? The reason games are so easy now is because they appeal to the lowest common denominator - which is exactly why he's contemplating easy mode, to avoid repulsing anyone. You can suppose that if you introduce gamers, you might get them to learn and progress, but I don't think that will be more than the amount of people that put the game down and never think of it again. Once you begin casting a wide enough net to appeal to everyone, you tend to lose your personality...
  • Dark Souls: Bethesda Mode

  • I don't care as long as it doesn't effect the balancing of the default difficulty.

  • Yes. Im not one to revel in challenges. If this happened, Dark Souls would be one of my favorite games of all time. Also this game was designed around using adaptation to situations in order to overcome challenges. The difficulty is only part of the experience.
  • NooOooOoooo!!!!

  • This would convince me to buy it. I can appreciate having a sense of accomplishment from achieving something difficult in a game, but I find plenty of accomplishment elsewhere in my life as well. I've always heard that this was an immensely difficult game, so I haven't tried it yet, but there's a difference between difficult and 'frustrating'. Difficult is taking out the hordes of Templars at the beginning of AC1- frustrating is having a jump-puzzle on a FPS where you can't see your feet. Difficult, I'm okay with, but frustrating just makes me want to choke a programmer with a USB cord.
