The lights are on
The trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is impressive, but do we really want to play as Snake in an open world?
Obviously, we can't pass judgement on the game until we've been able to play it, nor can we make assumptions about the gameplay until we have seen more of it. That being said, when I see the phrase, "open world," I think of something close to Grand Theft Auto, and I don't think I want to sneak around something comparable in size to Liberty City. Alternatively, there is the argument that Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3 are already open world. Each one of those games, after a certain point in the story, allow you to visit any area of the world at any time. Leading up to that point though, there is always a very specific linear path of progression leading you to the end.
If I need to get to point A to continue the story, do I need to dodge randomly generated spotlights and soldier patrols on the way there? Will areas no longer be designed around pre-determined soldier routes? Who knows. That's why we're discussing it here. Do you want an open world Metal Gear Solid? Or do you want a linear path like Metal Gear Solids of the past?

No The Idea sickens me. Get back to bringing me through narrow escapes in hallways full of snakes!
Then when I am done put me through a tutorial allowing me to pilot my f16 into an anti gear campaign across the sky!
Seems like a bit of a redundant question. None of us really have a choice in the matter, do we...? Regardless, I can't think of a better style of level design for the MGS series.
Previously, you could look at each room as a mini stealth puzzle to negotiate; now, the whole enemy base is one. I imagine the level design wouldn't be far off of Hitman.
THIS IS A VERY GOOD THING.
With the announce of a new Metal Gear Solid, I literally jumped out of my seat. Asking for an open world Metal Gear Solid game brings me back to memories of some areas in MGS 4. There is that one mission where you follow the rebel to the hideout. That one mission was a really open area, and i liked the openness of it, but having it so that you could go anywhere in the area would be too big.
Metal Gear Solid 3 has done a good job with the different ways you can go through the forests and maintain a linear passage way at the same time, but then sometimes through the MGS games there has been a feeling of it being too linear.
If there was a way to have it so that it's an open world, but have it so you can't enter some areas of the world, it would be fine. Just as long as it works with the realism and the genre that the MGS games are.
I just know that it won't look anywhere NEAR as good as it does in that trailer on my PS3.
i didnt realize they said it was open world, i thought that was talking about the metal gear social ops or something.
I trust Hideo Kojima will make a very enjoyable game, and if it is open world, then it will be just as fun as any other Metal Gear Solid.
I'm totally cool with an open world. Plus I don't think it's going to be open world like a GTA or Elder Scrolls. I think it's going to be broken up into large sections, kind if in the same way MGS4 was divided into section only in Ground Zero's the sections will be larger. I'm sure there will also be fast travel or some equivalent so you wont be forced to sneak through areas to get to another. Plus Kojima said that you can go to different countries and such. Now, I just hope that there is some Peace Walker aspects where I can recruit/build an army and have them attack enemy bases and positions.
I'm cool with it as long as it's nothing like MGS4!
I'm up for any open world game
I don't get what's with people and open world games. Now everyone just wants a game to be open world. It doesn't have to be open world to be good guys.
This game looks cool. I just got a M4 like in the game www.airsplat.com/airsoft-video-games.htm and they have a bunch of other guns from different games.
This is the next step in the series's evolution. When it comes out, people are gonna be saying "how the hell did we doubt this in the first place?!?!?!?"
I think open world could be a good idea and a nice change of pace from the old stealth mainstay.
I think it should be kind of like Grand Theft Auto if it's going to be open-world. I hate the idea of having a Metal Gear like Elder Scrolls. That kind of totally non-linear open world game would ruin Kojima Productions, but an open world with a linear storyline would be great. Think of it as a console Peace Walker, where you manage Mother Base, do missions that are important to it, but you still have to keep up with a progressing storyline. It wouldn't be easy, but if anybody can do, Kojima can.
