The lights are on
The trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is impressive, but do we really want to play as Snake in an open world?
Obviously, we can't pass judgement on the game until we've been able to play it, nor can we make assumptions about the gameplay until we have seen more of it. That being said, when I see the phrase, "open world," I think of something close to Grand Theft Auto, and I don't think I want to sneak around something comparable in size to Liberty City. Alternatively, there is the argument that Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3 are already open world. Each one of those games, after a certain point in the story, allow you to visit any area of the world at any time. Leading up to that point though, there is always a very specific linear path of progression leading you to the end.
If I need to get to point A to continue the story, do I need to dodge randomly generated spotlights and soldier patrols on the way there? Will areas no longer be designed around pre-determined soldier routes? Who knows. That's why we're discussing it here. Do you want an open world Metal Gear Solid? Or do you want a linear path like Metal Gear Solids of the past?

I think Kojima has earned the benefit of the doubt
That pic looks like liam neeson
I was really put off by the idea of an open world Metal Gear at first but the more I think about it, the more I think it might be really cool. Tackling objectives my own way could be fun as long as it's somewhat guided (for example: can't reach point C without dealing with an issue at point B). I trust that Kojima and his team will make it a very memorable experience - as they always do.
...kojima know his work and his game...just let him work...
I'm interested in it, to say the least. I think it will be a fresh change to a already amazing style of game that MGS brings to the table.
Either way, I trust that Kojima knows what he's doing better than anyone else, so I'm not gonna worry.
I think that this is kojima trying something knew and that is great I am sure this game will be great. But the use of the metal gear solid IP could either turn out as a strong point in the series or a sower note. I am just worried that they will ruin what makes metal gear so great. That is my only worry. But at the same time it would be nice to see this game do some new things or build up on the multiplayer ideas of metal gear online and the coop in peace walker. Those I enjoyed and would love to see this (at least the coop implemented) with the fox engine which looks gorgious.
I've been wondering how open world MGS would work. Maybe it'd be something along the lines of the Sly Cooper games where you visit different areas and are able to explore around. However like most people have already said, I don't like the idea of having to sneak around just to start a mission.
I'll withhold judgement till I see more though.
As long as it doesn't have 30minutes-1hr cutscenes like MGS4
I really don't care. I've played both kinds, open-world games and games without an open world as such. If this Metal Gear makes it to PC, I'll be very happy - open world or not.
to be honest, I wish the open world formula would, not exactly the genre, but the idea be pushed into more games. In Super Mario, I wish the levels were more bigger and fun to explore like Sunshine. In Zelda, I loved roaming Hyrule field on Epona and I'm hoping for something even bigger in the next Zelda game. If it follows a Red Dead/Grand Theft Auto formula, I think it will fail.
I really like the idea of and open world MGS, but there are a few things that I hope they take into account before releasing the game. First of all, I'm hoping there will be quick ways to move about the map since sneaking past all the obstacles every time you want to go somewhere could get annoying really fast. Second, if the world is too large it may make traversal even more difficult. If it's too small, it could feel like there aren't enough new locations to explore depending on how long the game is. Over all I'm really excited to see how the game turns out though. I think Kojima will nail this one just like all the previous games.
I'm really looking forward to it. Not much because it is an open-world Metal Gear Solid, but because it's an open-world Hideo Kojima game. The way he approaches all the minimum details on the MGS series, from story to gameplay, is absolutely amazing. I can't wait to see it applied and expanded on an open-world, Kojima-made, FOX Engine-powered game.
Batman: AA and AC are both open world stealth games and they did pretty well last I checked
I think Kojima should have waited for the next-gen consoles.
Open world sounds good to me.
I have a huge amount of faith in Kojima that he will make an open world work for MGS.
I would like if it had an open world style hub, like Deus Ex, where you can find secrets and get intel on your missions or do sidequests. And like the Deus Ex, the mission areas would be a bit more open in that you don't have to follow a direct path to your objective. It would encourage exploration to find an easier way to circumvent enemies and trickier areas. I believe Kojima already said that he was taking some inspiration from Deus Ex for the next Metal Gear Solid, so I wouldn't be too surprised if the game was like this. And I feel like it would work well in the series because the MGS games already kind of encourage exploration and there is a bit of leeway with the way you handle a scenario, just not as much as I would like.
