Reader Discussion: Do You Want An Open World Metal Gear Solid?

by Kyle Hilliard on Sep 03, 2012 at 12:26 PM

The trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is impressive, but do we really want to play as Snake in an open world?

Obviously, we can't pass judgement on the game until we've been able to play it, nor can we make assumptions about the gameplay until we have seen more of it. That being said, when I see the phrase, "open world," I think of something close to Grand Theft Auto, and I don't think I want to sneak around something comparable in size to Liberty City. Alternatively, there is the argument that Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3 are already open world. Each one of those games, after a certain point in the story, allow you to visit any area of the world at any time. Leading up to that point though, there is always a very specific linear path of progression leading you to the end.

If I need to get to point A to continue the story, do I need to dodge randomly generated spotlights and soldier patrols on the way there? Will areas no longer be designed around pre-determined soldier routes? Who knows. That's why we're discussing it here. Do you want an open world Metal Gear Solid? Or do you want a linear path like Metal Gear Solids of the past?
