Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops Announced

A new Metal Gear Solid title is coming to GREE, a social networking service in Japan. It's called Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops and is being made with the Unity Engine for smart phones. The announcement was made during today's Metal Gear 25th Anniversary event. The game is scheduled for release this fall in Japan and will be playable at the Tokyo Game Show next month.

No other details were reported at this time, such as whether or not Social Ops is being released internationally. Check out the gameplay screens from the event captured by Mark MacDonald of 8-4 Ltd., a video game localization company in Japan.

  • Well, it looks good.

  • We used Unity to make a lot of games in my game programming class last year. In my view it is a limited Engine but you can do some really amazing stuff with it. Hopefully this turns out to be a really cool thing in the end.

  • I think you might mean "Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops".
  • it looks like metal gear. i hope it's good. i hear social game and i have bad flashbacks to those facebook games with my wife. She finally allowed me to stop playing with her, i guess she got tired of the games or of my whining.

  • ahhhhhh crapppp! For a moment there I though it was a ps vita title. Special ops sounded like Portable Ops. I was so exited until saw "In Japan" and "smart phone". Dammi#

  • awww smeart phone!?
  • So much MGS news. Great day.

  • nice

  • Okay seriously, what's up with all of these social games. What's next, a Persona social game, wait, that actually makes sense.

  • I would totally play a Metal Gear social game!

  • Sounds pretty cool. Let's hope it comes to the US as well!

  • I bet the gameplay would be incredibly fustrating.

  • Where did all these spammers trying to sell stuff come from? So annoying...
  • Too many social games out there.

  • Is it just only going to release Japan that sucks hope it comes to the US

  • Cool. Kojima is one Japanese developer who seems intent on keeping pace with, and blowing away some, western studios. It's cool to hear they're using Unity. That platform is GREAT for making games. So easy-to-use, so flexible.

Not everything needs a multi-million dollar, many-years-in-the-making, expensive to engineer, world-class engine. The kind of thing in Last of Us or Agni's Philosophy, where the only way to produce quality assets for it in a timely fashion is to employ 8 studios to do outsourcing.

Although it's cool that he's going that route too, with the Fox Engine ;)

  • I need to see more information on this before I decide how to feel about it.
