Metal Gear Solid Movie Announced

Kojima Productions and Columbia Pictures are bringing you a Metal Gear Solid movie, according to reports. Avi Arad (X-Men, Spiderman), is producing the film.

The announcement was made during today's Metal Gear 25th Anniversary presentation. "For many years I fought to bring comics to theaters - and video games are the comics of today," Arad said, as reported by John Ricciardi of 8-4 Ltd., a video game localization company based in Japan.

"We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed," Arad added.

We'll update this story with more information as it becomes available.

  • Please make it good!
  • I think I'm in shock!!
  • Wow, that was quite fast. Well, hope they don't mess it up

  • If David Hayter isn't Snake this movie is an instant failure. Heck, let him write it as well. Apparently his Watchmen script was awesome.
  • It's not April Fools yet is it? But yeah, let David Hayter and Hideo Kojima have as much involvement as possible.
  • No. The Games are far from likable in my opinion, So, I Have NO faith in a movie adaption.
  • !
  • Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots was pretty much already a trilogy... How could they possibly top something in a maybe 90-120 minute movie.
  • I'm too world weary with bad adaptations to think this has any way of being good, or even halfway decent. I see way too many good properties turn into horrible movies time after time. A director finds the rights to "one of those video games all the kids are talking about" and thinks it could be a little quick cash. When the movie turns to s***, he laughs it off saying something like, "Video games don't have the complexities of modern film," and were stuck seeing the 2 1/2 stars IMDB gave it when looking up our favorite games. Reading this back, it seems a little bit angry. Its just rage at director after director feeding vampire-esque off of beloved franchises.
  • Bring in Christian Bale as Batman, and don't mess anything up from the games and we'll have ourselves a stellar movie.
  • yeah i have little hope for this movie

  • Here's the problem with video game adaptations. Movie studios are stupid. They see that some game is popular, so they think, "Lets get in on some of that money." So then they try to make a movie about a game. But they assume that the actual game company that made it doesn't know anything about movies. So they try to have them involved as little as possible. But the movie studio doesn't know anything about the game. So then they just put "Hollywood" in the production, trying to hit as wide an audience as they can. But the only people who would care to see the movie are the people who are big fans of the game. But since the movie studio really doesn't know what they're doing to the franchise, they end up pissing off the fans. So then the movie bombs, and everyone loses.
  • This has been in talks for awhile and to see a producer approach the project with seriousness is promising. I find Hayter an exceptional script writer and VO actor, however, his doesn't have the look of Snake to play him in person. I would strongly recommend that Hayter is part of the script writing team after all he knows the character best, second to Kojima of course.

Additionally, I would assert that like the Uncharted franchise, the Metal Gear franchise so successfully tells the story in its current medium that it almost doesn't need a film adaptation. Not to mention the 30+ minutes of cutscenes. All that to say, I still would look forward to see Snake on the big screen.
  • unless the movie is 20 hours long its never going to hope to explain mgs

  • I am not too excited about this.

  • about damn time!
  • Oh boy, I hope Uwe Boll directs it! He is obviously the best director of all time...
  • It had better be as bizarre and campy as the games. Maybe some big twist, so the movie is a mind trip just like the games.
  • they have to make this cg snakes voice is too iconic for any random actor to do
