The lights are on
According to an unidentified source from Sony, PlayStation 4 (or whatever the next Sony console will be called) will support 4K resolution, which is the next advancement in television visual quality.
The supposed idea behind PlayStation 4's compatibility with the next wave of high-definition televisions, is to entice consumers to upgrade their home entertainment systems. Sony tried the same thing by pushing 3D as hard as it could, but the technology never seemed to find its footing. Sony is already selling Blu-ray players that support 4K resolution, so it wouldn't be too surprising to learn that the next PlayStation would contain similar technology.

Since the PS3 is currently in its 6th year, going on its 7th, I can see 4K being a valid inclusion later in the PS4(?) lifecycle. Since the bulk of Sony's manufacturing is in the Television/Monitor space (don't forget, they don't just make flat screens for consumers, they make a LOT of professional grade display equipment) the investment probably isn't that much for them when it is spread across all of their divisions. People complained about the PS3 coming with a Blu-Ray player when it first came out... and look at it now. 3D didn't quite work out, but they didn't release a console solely based on 3D output, that was just another thing the PS3 supported. People have been shooting 4K in cinema for years, and 4K projector and monitor solutions have been around for a while in the professional world. It makes sense it's starting to show it's head in the consumer space.
Well I guess this is good. 4k probably won't be a staple in homes for a while (since it's extremely expensive at this point), but at least they are thinking long term with the PS4.
Just like how the PS3 could do 1080p @ 60fps, right?
I would like to know why we even need 4k resolution. The only way the human eye would even be able to tell the difference is if the screen has a large viewing area. Ever compare a 40" TV running at 1080P beside one running at 720P? Also, 4k resolution is brand new. Here is a link for some info on LG's 84" 4k TV. According to this article, 4k is a ways out to be in everyone's living room. For that matter, not everyone has a TV that can even support 1080P yet. www.pcmag.com/.../0,2817,2408763,00.asp
My Tv can support the highest resolution on the PS3 right now so PS4 will probably be 720, i can live with that, fooking cheapskates Sony, better make your graphics better & game engines.
Also, up-scaled from 720? XD
Ugly people... you can't hide! The 4K resolution will find you!!!
This new feature must be for the Sony CEOs & Oil Execs, because I can't imagine who else will be able to afford 4K Res. Do we really need that anyway...? I've not had any problem enjoying how powerful 1080p Res & for my PC, 1920x1200 Res power is.
