Rumor: Sony's Next Console May Support 4K Resolution

According to an unidentified source from Sony, PlayStation 4 (or whatever the next Sony console will be called) will support 4K resolution, which is the next advancement in television visual quality.

The supposed idea behind PlayStation 4's compatibility with the next wave of high-definition televisions, is to entice consumers to upgrade their home entertainment systems. Sony tried the same thing by pushing 3D as hard as it could, but the technology never seemed to find its footing. Sony is already selling Blu-ray players that support 4K resolution, so it wouldn't be too surprising to learn that the next PlayStation would contain similar technology.

  • Holy...! Also, why does the source have to be unidentified?
  • We shall see what becomes of this. Seems interesting to say the least.
  • Rumor: Sony rhymes with pony, which is a small horse
  • 4K would be "O" k with me. (pun intended) 2nd!
  • Well I'm all for higher definition TV's, better quality is always better and it's not gimmicky like 3d which probably won't last. Hopefully the price of the TVs aren't ridiculous though.
  • That would be called Winning the Console Wars. Or at least just Winning!
  • Dang...but really, I don't need to have a Godly resolution to play a game that looks good. I just want a good art style.
  • I hope this rumor is true!!! Good job, Sony!!! :D

  • Nice
  • That would be pretty cool! I would definitely love playing some of the more beautiful/scenic games in what we shall now call, SUPER AWESOME 4 HD! That's right, 4!
Anyways, I still need to get a PS3... D: Gah, PlayStation why you so good?
  • **BRAAAHHHH**, GI, you guys really need to clarify stuff like this. While the next PS system may support 4K, I can almost guarantee that will be for Bluray video ONLY. Developers have a hard enough time producing games in full 1080p. Some 1st party game will probably support 4k, as I'm sure Sony will issue a company wide mandate to support it, but nearly all 3rd party games will still be at 720p or 1080p.
  • SAY WHAAAAAAAA

  • What does 4K resolution look like? It sounds insane!
  • Makes sense to me. Hell I'd be on board with it... if I could afford the TV.

  • Didn't PS3 receive a 4K patch a while ago?
  • I'll wait for 8K... wich is hyper realistic graphics... It's actually just a refrigerator box, with a small asian man inside using hand puppets to portray the action. And the remote is just a keychain flashlight.
  • Too bad 4K TV's cost upwards of $20,000 right now.....as long as adding this feature doesn't impact the price I have to pay for the console kudos to them.

  • I can't see this being a big system seller until later in the console life, if ever. 4K will be facing a fairly big uphill battle in the television market, and I'm not sure this really does anything special for Sony. It could very well be the next 3D in terms of a failed aspect that they pursue with great amounts of resources only to see it not succeed. Here's a good article on 4K, if interested: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2012/06/4k-tvs-are-coming-but-they-face-an-uphill-battle-in-the-home/
  • I'm not surprised at all. Sony has a lot of irons in the fire. It only makes sense to make them all work together.

  • Let's clarify that rumor, it will, not may. Sony is a very progressive company that loves their 10 year cycles, and as such would be foolish of them to not support it. They support 3D, even though most consider it a fad. It isn't, it may be unpopular, but companies are still trying in vein to push it. It'll get better and less awkward. We haven't found that perfect medium yet. Heck I even bet Xbox (whatever) will have 4K support, thus continuing the trend that the WiiU will be severely dated by the time those two come out. Hey at least we'll be able to get the same stale IP though on the WiiU.
