Original Story: Nintendo Power, one of the longest-running game magazines, is shutting down, according to reports. Ars Techinica first reported the details, saying Future Publishing is planning to stop publishing the magazine.

The report says Nintendo Power staff was informed of the closure last week and are currently being transitioned to other properties at Future. It's unclear at this time how many more issues of Nintendo Power will be published or what will happen to current subscribers.

A source speaking to Ars Technica said Nintendo was always "difficult to work with" and the company was uninterested in renewing its contract or "taking part in a number of digital initiatives that Future saw as necessary for the long-term health of the brand."

The magazine first started in 1988.

Both Nintendo and Future have been reached for comment.

  • It's truly a sad day.
  • Oh well, GI is better!
  • That truly is shocking.
  • A sign of things to come maybe. Nintendo is always difficult. Telling fans what we want out of gaming rather than listening. Sad for all of the people that have to find work elsewhere. Hope things work out for all of them.
  • Well there goes my childhood...

  • No, geeze that sucks. I hate Gamestop and their money grubbing, but I am thankful they at least keep you guys alive.
  • So sad this was my first subscription to a magazine.
  • This is a sad day indeed. I wonder how long gaming magazines as a whole are safe. Even newspapers don't have that long left.....
  • This really is crazy. Nintendo Power has always been around, man.

  • Holy crap. A world without Nintendo Power? What's to become of gaming?
  • Wow :/ That really sucks, I remember always going to a friend's and reading his Nintendo Power magazines.... Kind of makes me feel old now :(

  • Wow...this is a sad day for gaming magazines everywhere. A moment of silence?
  • NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why!? Why Nintendo!? Why!? Why can't you just renew the contract!? I love Nintendo Power magazine! :'( *sinffle sniffle* It looks like i'm going to have to resort to Nintendo Gamer on my iPod Touch (Hooray).
  • Nintendo is going downhill by "being hard to work with". That is what destroyed the wii and why the only games they release anymore involve either Mario or Zelda franchises. I loved this magazine when I was younger. Sad that it is finally over with.
  • Sad, this was my first magazine.
  • Well that sucks. I never really cared for the the magazine nowadays. But back in the 90s it was huge for all gamers because internet wasn't wide spread. I wish the editors there the best of luck.
  • I honestly wouldn't be the gamer I am today without that magazine. Thank you Nintendo Power for everything.
  • I never read it, but that is sad that something that was probably a gaming staple for some people is being took away.I feel especially sorry to them because I know how I would feel if Gameinformer got shut down. *knock on wood*

A bit off topic but what the hell is with the bearded guy winking at me in that add up in the corner, how does that make anyone want to buy shirts from there.
  • I was one of the first subscribers. Nintendo sent me a free copy of Dragon Warrior as a subscriber bonus. This is very sad I have a lot of fond memories reading the magazine. The Simons Quest cover that was deemed too scary for kids, Howard and Nestor there is so much history in those pages. It is the end of an era.
  • Huh, it is a sad day indeed. I was not expecting this at all.
