Swery Talks Deadly Premonition Future

One of this generation's strangest and most beloved cult hits may get a sequel.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Deadly Premonition designer Hidetaka "Swery" Suehiro says his team at Access Games is working on a new project that should be revealed by next summer.

While no concrete hints were dropped as to what this next game could be, Swery did talk about what he'd like to do with a Deadly Premonition sequel. And it doesn't just sound like wishful thinking on his part. He's discussing it with the team.

"I meet once a month with the producer of Deadly Premonition and we talk about various things," he said. "There are things I've come up with the producer has said no to. I suggested Deadly Premonition 2 should be as though Deadly Premonition 1 had never existed. I wanted to do everything from scratch, but the producer said I couldn't do that. So, for example, like with Spider-Man, you've got Spider-Man and the Amazing Spider-Man, so the same series but a different world. I wanted to do something like that but was told no. The producer said the fans love York, and so I have to carry on with him as the protagonist."

To coincide with Access Games' 10th anniversary, a Director's Cut of Deadly Premonition is in the works and should be released this year. Swery says this version could include new scenarios.

For the full interview, and more tidbits about both games of note, check out Eurogamer's excellent write-up. I don't know about you folks, but I wouldn't mind seeing Agent York return...with a little more polish and the same amount of cheese.

  • I loved this game.

  • this was the 360 only game right? Looked really good, too bad I didn't have the chance to play it, I wish they would let the creator do whatever he envisions, usually makes the game better, some games when forced to change usually suck, *cough cough* Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts *cough*
  • There haven't been enough good Horror games lately. I haven't played the first one yet, but hopefully it, and the sequel, will help put Horror games back on the map.

  • Weird game... Very weird actually. Some people like weird. Maybe it will sell okay...
  • I'm still waiting for the Director's Cut version to be released so I can finally play this game. ^_^

  • Lol, man this game helped define this generation for me.

  • Mod
SWERY has been talking about a Deadly Premonition prequel and sequel ever since the first one became such a major thing. He's been working on a few games since the first Deadly Premonition, though, so it's understandable that it's taken this long. Hopefully work on the sequel hasn't been too static in spite of that.

Even though Deadly Premonition is one of my favorite games of this console generation, I remain cautiously optimistic. I don't want the new game to be just a rehash of old ideas, and I hope it isn't as repetitive.

Other than that, I'd be content with a standalone sequel, a new game with York, a new setting/character in the old universe, whatever. Odds are good I'll be getting the Director's Cut of the first Deadly Premonition, too.
  • okay feel read see video miss

  • In an industry filled with cookie-cutter shooters & fuelled by big money, Im so grateful for the existence of Deadly Premonition. A sequel would be ace.

I would buy it again for the directors cut, for sure.
  • I loved Deadly Premonition, and I'm already hyped for a sequel, but I think Swery's got the right idea. York's story has a complete and perfectly satisfying arc in DP, and I think continuing it with him would just cheapen all of the crazy, life-changing *** that happens to him at the end of the first DP. I mean, without spoiling too much, he's practically a different person by the end of the game. While York may be one of the biggest inexplicable draws in this inexplicably fascinating game, we really can't continue with the York everyone knows and loves unless they backtrack and throw the last act of the first game out the window. I kinda want to see what other bizarre characters we can pry out of Swery's head. If there were enough to populate a whole town in Deadly Premonition, there's gotta be more where that came from, right? I'd like to see a new protagonist with new idiosyncrasies. Let's give Francis York Morgan a hard-earned break.
  • I love the idea of having DP2 as though DP1 had never existed. Bring back agent York each time but come up with new stories and settings. Have it be like the Legend of Zelda.

Fun Fact: This was the first time Deadly Premonition and The Legend of Zelda have had the slightest of comparisons

  • 360 version of Directors Cut please!
  • Definitely one of my favorite videogame stories ever. I want a sequel, it would be hard to top the story but not the gameplay.

  • Never played it. Was it good?
  • Deadly Premonition could make for a pretty successful sequel, I'd imagine. Now, after Giantbomb exposed the game to the world (or, at least, gamers on the internet), there's quite a bit of cache associated with the brand. At least, moreso than for a ton of other games. That can translate into sales for another entry in the would-be series, if the next game is good enough - and weird enough - to satiate fans. For the right budget, a savvy publisher could totally make some bank with Deadly Premonition 2. I don't know how I feel about this producer though. On the one hand, I DO love York - and Zack;) But on the other hand, you should probably let SWERY do what he wants. Otherwise we won't end up with something as genuinely offbeat as the last one. Look at Suda 51; the more mainstream he gets, the further away he gets from stuff like Killer 7 and No More Heroes.
  • Sounds good...

  • I'd be all for a Deadly Premonition sequel!

  • Oh, great.  Thanks for encouraging him; you ironical bastards.

  • As long as the sequel has another scene of the guy eating the "Sinner's Sandwich" (seriously, for those who don't know, google it)

  • Dying for the ps3 version to come out.  I can get over the gameplay is story is good enough.  While Heavy Rain's gameplay wasnt bad, I am just not a fan of qte.  But i was so enraptured by the story I couldnt stop playing it
