The lights are on
Copernicus, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game from the now defunct 38 Studios, was planned as a free-to-play game.
In an interview with Boston Magazine, Curt Schilling, the founder of 38 Studios, said, "We were going to be the first triple-A, hundred-million-dollar-plus, free-to-play, micro-transaction-based MMO. That was one of our big secrets. I think when we eventually showed off the game for the first time, the atom bomb was going to be free-to-play. When we announced that at the end, that was gonna be the thing that, I think, shocked the world."
Schilling went on to say that while they were gathering investors at the end of 38 Studios' life, that fact that it was free-to-play was what made investors most excited to invest. Schilling said, “Most investors wanted nothing to do with subscription-based products, they were all on the social media, and free-to-play games as a means to revenue.”

Can the GI staff stop posting these stories about 38 and their cancelled games? It is really sad and only shows what could have been. =/
The video shows they had some great looking scenery in place. Wonder how it would have played? Too bad, really.. bit off more than they could chew :(
It's a darn shame. RIP 38 Studios.
Calling BS on this. Schilling's investors would have flayed him alive if he had tried to launch their $150m investment with no upfront cost.
Well, I guess there is no hope this will ever be released now. Sounded really cool!
I'm not sold on the whole "free-to-play" model yet, given that it's advertisement-based and/or "nickel-and-dime" based.
Neither of those things interest me, and would only take video games down an unenjoyable path to profits like modern television. "Chapter 1 of Mega RPG 2 completed. Now a word from our sponsors." ...for the next twenty minutes.
Wow.. A MMO for free, that puts a smile on my face. The last stupid free-to-play MMO was a turn base RuneScape.. and that didn't make me smile... :(
This whole free to play thing is sketchy.
