Darksiders II Combat Tips From The Designer

Darksiders II released earlier this week, but if you're struggling to overcome some of the game's larger enemy encounters, put some of these pro tips to use.

Vigil’s Lead Combat Designer Ben Cureton walking us through Darksider II's combat. Read what Andrew Reiner thought of the game here.

  • I'll just do things the old-fashioned way. SPAM ALL THE BUTTONS!
  • Looks cool, I think I'll be picking it up.

  • I just love this game I haven't stop playing since it came out. DEATH LIVES!
  • This games combat rocks! It's so fluid and makes you feel truly bada**. Plus, getting new weapons like every 10 minutes is also awesome.

  • Combat isn't that hard. I enjoy it though. Just use reaper mode for boss battles, summon when many enemies surround you, and use good combos.
  • This game is awesome. I do have to evade a lot more than I am used to, but that's fine with me as I learn Death's mechanics and npc's actions. Got to work on my combos though (Sure, you can smash your way through...but the combos are beautifully graceful with point racking).

I just don't know if I am going to stick to the XBox 360 controller or switch up to the speedpad+mouse. Camera spinning/panning to face my enemy just isn't fast enough (for me).

  • I just finished Darksiders and it rocks, can't wait to pick this game up! But I'm curious, who do you guys think is the coolest rider? From reading the comic it goes: Death, War, Strife, Fury. Death looks like a total bad-ass, War was super fun to play as, and Strife's guns look super awesome.
  • Love the coverage on DS2. Great game.

  • My advice learn to dodge. Spamming buttons doesn't work. You are gonna have to learn to dodge or die.
  • Ah, very good. When all else fails- agility wins!

  • "Heavy weapons...crush everything." So true. The hammers in particular seem almost OP.
  • The combat is really fun. So many moves to do.

  • Wonderful. Share a website with you , ( http://www.chic-goods.us/ ) Believe you will love it. We accept any form of payment.
  • I was already impressed with how good the first one was. This one just takes it to the next level. Vigil really outdid themselves.

  • I am really going to need these tips in the arena!

  • The game is MUCH harder than the first. I find myself getting my ass kicked regularly, and I beat all God of War games on the hardest difficulty. Enemies will just constantly swarm you and they don't wait their turn like most games. So, even if you are in mid swing they will just keep hitting you from all angles. I'm using pretty powerful weapons and taking full advantage of combos, but it really doesn't matter, you're going to get hit all the time since they are programmed to keep nailing you even when you are mid swing and can't do anything. There is no block, only dodge.

It gets frustrating after a while, since healthpacks are scarce. Other than that, and the fact that it somehow looks worse and much lower res than the first, it is a great game. Oh, and your bird is completely useless. If you get lost, don't even bother asking it where to go. 9 times out of 10 it brought me in the wrong direction. Usually to a room I already cleared that had nothing in it, or to a door that was locked and didn't need opening for another 45 minutes or so. Completely busted.

Other than those gripes, it is a great game. I wish it was a smaller, more focused game like the first, but beggars can't be choosers. It's great fun, with great weapons, voice acting, story, and level design. They dole out the cool gadgets at a MUCH slower pace compared to the first, so be prepared to unlock awesome gear much slower. It took me 4 or more dungeons before I unlocked my first real tool, the hookshot. I'm loving where the story is going though, so that makes up for it.

I wonder why it looks so much worst than the first? Probably because it is so much bigger? I even popped the first in to compare the two. The first is clean, crisp and has no screen tearing (well, not much. Darksiders 2 has a pixely look, with low res textures and jaggies everywhere. And the screen tearing is pretty horrible. I don't know if its the same on the PS3 or not.
  • To be honest, this combat is rather simple to survive. It is almost on the premise of high enough level/not high enough level. Otherwise, if you have the Evade Counter move, this game becomes a breeze. This is for survivability.

For timed runs, the combat becomes quite intriguing and thoroughly indepth. This is a discussion for later though, as I am still in the experimentation stage with this game, and am no where near this level of habit yet (let me finish the game once).

This is being said from experience on the previous title and Bayonetta, where dodge was everything.
  • Might get the game. Should I get this or wait for another game this fall that's not ACIII, BLOPS 2, BL2, or Absolution (I'm getting all of those)?
  • He should have had another tip: "Dodge or die."
