Media Molecule Backs Sackboy's Growing Resumé

by Jeff Cork on Aug 15, 2012 at 05:00 PM

Sony revealed at Gamescom that LittleBigPlanet's lovable Sackboy would be popping up in PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. It might seem a bit strange to see the foremost authority on playing, creating, and sharing transition to punching, kicking, and brawling, but his creators are on board with the cameo.

We spoke with members of the Media Molecule team about its upcoming project, Tearaway, during the show. Over the course of our conversation, Sackboy's cameo entered the discussion. If you're hoping for a bit of drama, you'll have to look elsewhere; the team is stoked to see his little guy make his way into a bigger world, even as their work on the LittleBigPlanet series has come to an end.

"I think when that was first brought up, there were some people who were like [makes a disapproving noise], but I think it's funny and it's cool," says creative director Mark Healey.

Technical director David Smith echoes the enthusiasm, giving additional credit to All-Stars' creators for getting Sackboy right. "If you look at the video of how he fights, it's through using all these creative mechanics. It's in the spirit of the character."

Alex Evans, another technical director at Media Molecule, explains that the team continues to be impressed at how other developers have taken Sackboy and made him their own, in games such as LittleBigPlanet Vita and LittleBigPlanet Karting.

It's cool to know that Media Molecule is in Sackboy's corner, even if they're taking a bit of a break from him. When he's facing off against heavies like Kratos and Sweet Tooth, Sackboy may need that kind of support.
