Dragon Commander No Longer Has Firm Console Plans

by Adam Biessener on Aug 15, 2012 at 12:00 PM

The indie turn-based strategy/non-linear adventure/real-time strategy/jetpack dragon action game Dragon Commander was always intended for consoles as well as PC, but unfortunately developer/publisher Larian Studios is losing faith that the game will make it onto televisions any time soon.

Though the company didn’t go into details during a demo of Dragon Commander at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, Larian has gone from “when” to “if” when it comes to launching the game on home consoles. Any number of things can go wrong when trying to release a console title, from trouble finding distribution and retail partners to difficulties reaching agreements about features with platform holders (i.e. Sony and Microsoft), but Larian says that making game work on console hardware in the first place is not the issue for Dragon Commander.

Whatever the reason, the news should come as a bummer for anyone with a taste for the weird and offbeat. Seriously, Dragon Commander has jetpack-wearing dragons and lets you marry a skeletal undead princess only to dump her when the (ahem) strict disciplinarian and bodaciously curvy dwarven princess comes around. I know I’m in favor of anything that promotes Larian’s oddball creation to a wider audience.

Check out our earlier looks at the game for more on Dragon Commander’s wonderful insanity, which should be hitting PCs sometime early next year.
